BRISTOL, Tenn. – King University Director of Athletics David Hicks announced the hire of Terry Caldwell as the interim head tennis coach on Thursday. Caldwell joins the Tornado tennis programs following the resignation of Mariia Ilina and he will remain with the Tornado for the remainder of the season when King will conduct a national search for a full-time coach.

"Terry is one of the most respected professionals in the Tri Cities," Hicks said. He's well known and respected as a coach and educator, but most importantly as an outstanding person. He has a tremendous knowledge of tennis and is a proven leader. He is the perfect person to step in as interim head coach and our student-athletes are fortunate to have him lead our tennis programs."

Caldwell brings a plethora of coaching experience to the Tornado, coaching swimming, tennis and golf at Virginia High School for 27 years, 16 coaching tennis. At the collegiate level, Caldwell coach swimming from 2010-12. In that time, Caldwell coached 11 Virginia state champions and 20 academic All-Americans.

"I am excited about being back in tennis, very much so at this level," Caldwell said. "To get back into the game I am extremely excited and grateful for that. I need to get the team prepared for the season, and that is my highest priority. I am a huge believer in academics, the teams should represent the mission and vision of King University."

During his time at Virginia High, Caldwell worked closely with the Virginia High School League (VHSL) and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) helping with competition development and officials training. He also earned coaching milestone awards from the VHSL in each tennis, golf and swimming.
