Hot shooting Cavaliers upset #14 King

WISE, Va. – The 14th-ranked King University men's basketball team looked to go into the holiday break on a high note as they traveled to take on UVa-Wise on Sunday afternoon. However, the Tornado ran into a hot shooting Cavalier squad that shot better than 50 percent from three as they took the 100-87 upset victory over the Tornado.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • UVa-Wise came out shooting, connecting on their first two triples, but the Tornado answered back with three-point baskets from C.J. Good and two from Derick Pope.
  • Hunter LeVeau then connected from long range to even the score at 14-14.
  • King then took a 19-17 lead following a triple and layup from Good before the Cavaliers went on a run.
  • UVa-Wise scored seven straight points to take the lead and held a 27-21 following a Matt Day trifecta with 12 minutes remaining in the first half.
  • A Calvin Walker layup cut the Tornado deficit to two, but the Cavaliers responded with a 10-0 run, giving them a 37-25 lead.
  • The Tornado deficit stayed between seven and 14 points the rest of the half before Good beat the halftime buzzer with a jumper to make the halftime score 54-46.
  • LeVeau and Good quickly pulled King within three with a triple and jump shot to start the second half.
  • Good cut the King deficit to 61-60 with another three-point basket, but Camryn Fort answered with one for the Cavaliers.
  • King later trailed 66-62 before Good connected from long range and Pope made a layup to give the Tornado a 67-66 lead with 13 minutes remaining.
  • However, the Cavaliers answered with eight straight points to regain the lead for good.
  • The Tornado were able to cut their deficit to four, but UVa-Wise had an answer for every Tornado run as they went on to take the contest 100-87.
  • Good led King with 23 points to go along with four rebounds to lead five scores in double figures.
  • Pope followed with 16 points and five rebounds while LeVeau added 15 points and eight rebounds.
  • Mack Owens added 11 points and seven rebounds while Mikquell Jackson chipped in with 10 points.
  • Walker handed out 13 assists to go along with six points and five rebounds.

FOR THE FOES

  • UVa-Wise set a new school record, making 18 three-point baskets. The Cavaliers shot a blistering 51.4 percent from three and 45.5 percent from the field in the contest.
  • Day led the Cavaliers with 28 points and 19 rebounds.
  • Fort followed with 23 pionts whiel Dimitri Sousa added 19 points and nine rebounds.

Philip Owens II chipped in with 14 points, four rebounds and eight assists.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • For the second straight contest, Good matched his career-high with 23 points.
  • Walker also matched a career-high with 13 assists. The last time he reached that mark was in February against Southern Wesleyan University.

UP NEXT

  • King will be in action again on January 3 when they travel to Kentucky Wesleyan College. Tipoff from Owensboro, Ky., is slated for 3:00 p.m. (ET)
  • UVa-Wise returns to action on January 4 at Fairmont State University.
