Box Score BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's volleyball team got a much needed win on Friday night at the Student Center Complex when they hosted Emmanuel College. Not only was it much needed, but the Tornado matched the program record with 13 wins this year with the 3-0 victory over the Lions.
King (13-10, 9-6 CC) grabbed control of the match early in the first set, using a 4-0 run to break a 3-3 tie. Jeff Sprayberry registered two of his team-high 10 kills on the run that put King ahead. The Tornado advantage grew to 13-5 before Emmanuel (4-16, 2-13 CC) called for a timeout. Out of the break, the Lions came back and got within two at 13-11 before King earned consecutive points to extend their lead and regain momentum. Leading 21-18, King scored four of the final five points, taking the set 25-19 on a kill from Matthew Lychock.
The second set was eerily similar to the first frame with King scoring six of the first seven points. King held their lead there for most of the set until the Lions made a run down the stretch, cutting their deficit to 22-21 before Eddie Moushikhian drilled home a kill to keep King ahead. After a Lion point, Adrian Besson gave King a chance at set point with one of his five kills in the match. Moshikhian then ended the 25-23 win with his third kill of the set.
Serowski and Sprayberry registered kills on a 4-0 King run that gave the Tornado a 9-3 lead to start the third set. From that point on, the Tornado gradually extended their lead en route to the 25-15 victory to take the match 3-0 and earn their 13th win of the season.
The victory matches the program record for wins in a season as the Tornado won 13 matches in 2009 and 2010.
King hit .312 in the match, including .391 in the final set. Sprayberry led King with 10 kills while hitting .562 in the match, committing just one error on 16 attempts. Serowski, Moushikhian and Lychock all added six kills, and Besson chipped in with five kills. Nick Drooker handed out 31 assists to go along with a team-high five digs.
King will be in action again on Tuesday when they travel to Belmont Abbey College. First serve from Belmont, N.C. is slated for 7:00 p.m.
