King sweeps home triangular

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University women's volleyball team got back into the win column on Tuesday afternoon when they hosted a triangular, facing Milligan College and Concord University. The Tornado took a pair of sweeps, first topping Milligan behind Lauren Willoughby's 13 kills. She was just heating up though as she posted 16 more kills in the nightcap sweep of Concord.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • King used an 8-3 run to open up an 18-11 lead en route to taking the first set 25-14 behind a .306 attack percentage.
  • The Tornado scored the first eight points of the second set and had to hold off a late rally from the Buffaloes, but ultimately took the set 25-21.
  • Milligan grabbed the lead in the early going, but the Tornado went on a 7-2 run to gain a 10-6 advantage. The Tornado then pulled away for the 25-20 victory.
  • Willoughby hit .370, 13 kills on 27 attempts with three errors to lead King. She also added nine digs on the defensive end.
  • Ashleigh Manke and Grace Underwood followed Willoughby with nine kills apiece.
  • Olivia Underwood dished out 225 assists for the Tornado offense.
  • Libero Amy Serowski led the defense with 14 digs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • King matched a season best with 13 service aces in the match, four from Willoughby.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tornado offense kept rolling in the nightcap, hitting better than .300 in each set against Concord. King hit .375 and received seven kills in the 25-16 first set win.
  • Grace Underwood then added four kills in the second set as King again hit .375 to take the set 25-15.
  • King then took the final set 25-14 behind an attack percentage of .300 and six kills from Willoughby.
  • Willoughby made only four attack errors on 34 attempts, posting 16 kills for an attack percentage of .370. The senior added nine digs.
  • Grace Underwood hit .538 with eight kills on 13 attempts with one error.
  • Manke chipped in with nine kills.
  • Serowski again led the defense with 13 digs.
  • Olivia Underwood led King with 25 assists while Haley Roe added 15 helpers.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • King hit .346 as a team, marking a season best, and the first time the Tornado have posted an attack percentage over .300.

  • The Tornado return to Conference Carolinas play Friday in the Student Center Complex when they host Emmanuel College at 7:00 p.m.
