King edged in battle at Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The King University men's volleyball traveled to take on the University of Mount Olive Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas play. The Trojans were able to edge the Tornado in three-of-four sets by just two points each set taking a tough 3-1 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tornado would jump out to a 5-3 lead in set one topped by a service ace from Sean Luhmann.
  • Mount Olive then answered back gaining a 6-7 lead that they would not let go of for the rest of the set.
  • Trading points for most of the set King would land an equalizer 23-23 off a kill from Jeff Sprayberry but Mount Olive took the next two points to win set.
  • Set two was again a back-and-forth battle for the lead as neither team would lead for more than two points the whole set.
  • A kill from Jon Wheaton would give the Tornado a 23-22 lead but the Trojans would go on to take the set 26-24 on two straight King attack errors.
  • Coming out in set three with some fire King led by as much as five points which the Tornado last held at 10-5 by a Sprayberry kill and then 11-6 of a service error from Mount Olive.
  • Mount Olive would fight back to tie the score 14-14 as the set would finish battling at a two point margin.
  • Trailing 23-22 the Tornado recorded three straight kills from Luhmann, Nick Drooker, and Sprayberry to take the set 25-23.
  • The Tornado started out the fourth set in the hole as the got down by as many as five points trailing 8-3.
  • A Mount Olive service error would even out the score 11-11, led by a couple more errors giving King a 13-11 lead.
  • Tied at 14-14 the Tornado landed four straight kills from Sprayberry, Luhmann and two from Wheaton giving them an 18-14 advantage.
  • With the Tornado leading 21-18 Mount Olive laid down a 5-0 run to take the lead 23-21.
  • Two kills from Matthew Lychock would bring King within a point but a Trojan kill would seal the deal 25-23 as UMO took a 3-1 win.
  • Sprayberry led the Tornado the with 16 kills
  • Luhmann added 14 kills hitting .393 and Lychock chipped in 11 kills hitting .444.
  • Drooker led King with 11 digs and posted 47 assists.

FOR THE FOES

  • Peyton Schirman led the Trojans with 16 kills.
  • Andrew Sydow, Robert Poole, and Kian Hollevoet recorded 11 kills apiece.
  • Ryan Thomas posted a match-high 19 digs.

UP NEXT

  • King will return home to continue in Conference Carolinas play against North Greenville University Tuesday night at 7:00 pm.
  • Mount Olive travels to Erskine College next Saturday.
