King's five home runs not enough to top LMU

HARROGATE, Tenn. – In a rematch of a game that the King University baseball team won a couple weeks ago, turned out the other way on Tuesday when they traveled to Lincoln Memorial University. King hit five home runs on the day, but the Railsplitters scored in each of the first six innings, taking the contest 14-9.

KING HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Tornado hit five home runs on the day, including two from Douglas.
  • Dayton, Hunt and Sligh all added home runs for King.
  • Sligh went 4-for-5 on the day and drove in three runs.
  • Douglas went 2-for-5 with those two home runs and two runs batted in.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Railsplitters opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning, one a Dillard single and another on a sacrifice fly from Erwers.
  • King answered in the top of the second, first on a home run from Douglas, then Sligh then evened the score with a single down the left field line that scored Hunt who singled earlier in the frame.
  • Lincoln Memorial tacked on one in the bottom of the inning on an Augustine single to regain the lead.
  • In the third inning, it was Hunt for the Railsplitters that ripped a two-out, three-run double, giving Lincoln Memorial a 6-2 lead.
  • Neiderland stretched the Lincoln Memorial lead to 8-2 with a two-run triple in the fourth, and later in the inning Sawyer drove in two more with a single.
  • Douglas struck again in the fifth for King, ripping his second home run of the day, this one off the scoreboard in right center field.
  • However, Dillard answered with a two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth, stretching the Lincoln Memorial lead to 12-3.
  • Sligh answered for King in the top of the sixth, lacing a two-run home run to left field for the Tornado.
  • After Neiderland tripled for the Railsplitters in the sixth, he scored on a Sawyer single, extending the Lincoln Memorial lead.
  • In the top of the seventh, Dayton cut into the deficit with a home run to left, and the Tornado scored two on a wild pitch.
  • The Railplislitters added one on a Hunt double in the eighth that score one.
  • In the ninth, Hunt led off with a home run for the Tornado, but that was all King would get as the Railsplitters turned a double play to take the game 14-9.

FOR THE FOES

  • Dillard led the Railsplitters, going 4-for-5 with three runs batted in and three runs scored.
  • Sawyer and Hunt each recorded three hits on the day with Sawyer driving in three and Hunt posting four runs batted in.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The two home run day for Douglas is the first multi home run game of his career. He now has five home runs on the season.
  • After his home run, Dayton is tied with Douglas for the team lead with five home runs on the season.
  • Sligh's home run was his third of the year.
  • For Hunt, that was his first home run as a Tornado.

UP NEXT

  • King returns to Conference Carolinas play when they host North Greenville University in a three game series. The opener is slated for 3:00 p.m. on Friday with Saturday's doubleheader scheduled for 12:00 p.m. first pitch.
