George Mason takes match from King in three

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Playing for the second time in as many days, the King University men's volleyball team squared off with George Mason University in the Student Center Complex. The first set went back-and-forth, but the Patriots took the frame on their way to the 3-0 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tornado got off to a great start, opening up a three point advantage early as Adrian Besson started the match with a kill. Jon Wheaton later gave King a 7-4 lead before the Patriots went on a run.
  • George Mason rolled off four straight points to take an 8-7 lead before Jeff Sprayberry registered a kill.
  • The teams then traded points until King scored back-to-back points, the first on a Sprayberry kill to take a 22-20 lead.
  • King later led 24-22 before the Patriots got three straight kills to take a 25-24 lead.
  • After the Tornado evened the set a 25-25, George Mason scored two straight points to take the set 27-25.
  • Matthew Lychock pulled King within 10-9 with a kill in the second set, but the Patriots answered with a 5-2 run to gain a 15-11 advantage.
  • George Mason continued to extend their lead, and took the second set 25-16.
  • The Patriots didn't slow down in the third set, scoring the first five points and opening up a 9-3 lead before King started to work their way back.
  • A block from Wheaton and Nick Drooker capped a 4-0 run for the Tornado that pulled King within 9-7.
  • After that point, George Mason didn't let the Tornado get within two points the rest of the way as they took the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
  • Sprayberry led King with 16 kills to go along with four digs.
  • Drooker handed out 26 assists and registered a team-high five digs.
  • Wheaton posted a team high five block assists.

FOR THE FOES

  • Jack Wilson led the Patriots with 20 kills while Christian Malias added 13 kills and eight digs.
  • Johnny Gomez posted a team high 11 digs and Brian Negron dished out 40 assists.

UP NEXT

  • King will be in action again on Tuesday when they host Limestone College at 6:00 p.m. in the Student Center Complex.
  • George Mason travels to take on Pfeiffer University on Saturday.
