King falls to ABU, Quincy on final day of tournament

BEREA, Ky. – The King University men's volleyball team wrapped up play at their tournament with a pair of tough matches on Tuesday against Alderson Broaddus University and Quincy University. The Battlers topped King 3-1 in the first match of the day before the Tornado fell to Quincy 3-0 in the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED – ALDERSON BROADDUS

  • King jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set over the Battlers and held the upper hand throughout the first half of the frame.
  • Alderson Broaddus used back-to-back points to take their first lead of the set at 16-15.
  • From that point on the Battlers stayed ahead and scored the final three points to take the first set 25-21.
  • The second set went back-and-forth before King got a kill from Jeff Sprayberry and service ace from Jon Wheaton, taking a 14-12 lead.
  • King later led 17-15 after another Sprayberry kill, but the Battlers scored three straight points to regain the lead.
  • The Tornado fought off a pair of set points, but the Battlers got a block to take the second set 25-23.
  • In the third set, King used a 7-1 run to open up a 13-7 lead. Ryan DeLong accounted for three kills on the run while Sprayberry and Matthew Lychock posted two apiece.
  • Alderson Broaddus made a run late, but Sprayberry gave King the 25-22 set victory with another kill.
  • King held a lead throughout the majority of the fourth set, and held a 19-16 advantage following a Sean Luhmann kill.
  • However, the Battlers scored six of the next eight points to take a 22-21 lead.
  • The Tornado evened the score at 23, but the Battlers scored the final two points, taking the set 25-23 for the 3-1 victory.
  • Sprayberry led King with 23 kills and 12 digs for the double-double.
  • Nick Drooker handed out 50 assists to go along with seven digs.
  • Luhmann added 13 kills and added six digs.

FOR THE FOES

  • Francisco Cabrera and Obenda Besongngem led Alderson Broaddus with 17 kills apiece. Cabrera added 11 digs and Besongngem chipped in with seven digs.
  • Will Ruiz added 11 kills while Kody Deiter posted 44 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED – QUINCY

  • Quincy broke a 6-6 tie in the first set with a 6-2 run to gain an advantage.
  • The Tornado worked their way back and evened the tally at 14-14 following a block from Wheaton and Drooker.
  • The teams then traded points until Quincy scored consecutive points, taking a 23-20 lead as they went on to take the set 25-21.
  • King scored the first five points of the second set, two on aces from Drooker, another on a Sprayberry kill and the final point on an Adrian Besson kill.
  • The Tornado held the lead over the first half of the set until the Hawks came back to even the score at 14-14.
  • Quincy took their first lead at 16-15 and extended their lead to 17-15 before King went on a run.
  • The Tornado scored four straight points, two one aces from Sprayberry and another on a block from Drooker and Wheaton, taking a 19-17 lead.
  • However, the Hawks scored eight of the final nine points to take the set 25-20.
  • The third set was just as tight, but the Hawks held the upper hand through out.
  • King held an 11-10 lead, but Quincy scored three straight points to regain the advantage.
  • Every time Quincy tried to pull away, King came through with a point to stay within three points.
  • However, the Tornado couldn't get any closer as Quincy took the set 25-22 for the 3-0 win.
  • Sprayberry led King with 13 kills to go along with five digs.
  • Drooker handed out 26 assists and posted four blocks.

FOR THE FOES

  • Jarrod Kelso tallied 12 kills and six blocks to lead Quincy.
  • Chris Chappelle added 11 kills and four digs.
  • Thane Fanfulik dished out 39 assists and posted eight digs.

UP NEXT

  • King will be in action again on Saturday when they travel to take on Saint Francis University. First serve from Loretta, Pa. is slated for 7:00 p.m.
