Tornado end regular season with sweep of Mount Olive

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Topping off the regular season on Senior Day with a sweep, the King University men's volleyball team defeated the University of Mount Olive in straight sets. In honor of lone senior Matthew Lychock, the Tornado gutted out a three set, tough fought victory over the Trojans with Lychock recording seven kills and hitting a blistering .500.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Kills from Sean Luhmann and Jon Wheaton grabbed King the first advantage up 2-1.
  • Mount Olive fired back with a 6-1 run to go up 7-3 on back-to-back kills from Mike Mann.
  • The Tornado bounced back with back-to-back Luhmann kills to get within one, trailing 8-7.
  • Nick Drooker posted back-to-back aces and lazered in the equalizer from the service line to tie set one 15-15.
  • Battling for the lead, Lychock and Luhmann gave King the advantage 17-16 with a stuff at the net.
  • Mount Olive took back the lead of a King error but King answered after a timeout with a kill from Sprayberry to tie the set 23-23.
  • The Trojans earned set point up 25-24 but the Tornado rallied off three straight kills to take the set 27-25 off a Lychock kill.
  • The Tornado again faced an early deficit, as the trailed Mount Olive 12-6 in set two.
  • Luhman posted a kill after trailing the Trojans 17-13 that sparked a Tornado 6-0 run with Nathan Veli on the service line as the Tornado took a 19-17 lead and forced a Mount Olive timeout.
  • The Mount Olive timeout was able to slow the King run but the Tornado would not give up the lead.
  • Mount Olive battled back to get within one trailing 22-21 but a King timeout led to a block from Wheaton and Adrian Besson to put King up 23-21.
  • The Trojans were able to tie the set 23-23 off a Tornado error but King earned the final two points off a Mount Olive error and sealed by a Luhmann kill from Drooker.
  • Unlike the prior sets the Tornado built an early led on the Trojans in set three going up 4-0 topped off by a Drooker, Wheaton block.
  • The Tornado continued to extended their lead as the went up 10-4 off a stuff at the net from Lychock and Sprayberry.
  • Mount Olive answered with a 6-0 run that cut the King lead to one, now just up 10-9 but a Trojan service error dampened the run.
  • Back-to-back kills from Wheaton and Luhmann gave the Tornado a four point cushion up 16-12.
  • Lychock advanced the King lead two five with a kill but the Trojans shorten the King advantage to two after a couple Tornado errors trailing 22-20.
  • After a timeout to readjust, Wheaton connected with Drooker for the kill and Sprayberry followed up with an ace to grab match point 24-20.
  • Besson sealed the deal with a kill to give King the 25-21 victory in set three, to complete the sweep.
  • Sprayberry led the Tornado with 10 kills, Luhmann added eight and they each posted two blocks. 
  • Wheaton tallied seven kills, hitting .333, and posted eight blocks.
  • Lychock also chipped in seven kills, hitting .500, and added three blocks.
  • Drooker recorded a match-high 19 digs, dished out 27 assists, posted two aces, and recorded five stuffs.

FOR THE FOES

  • Robert Poole recorded a match-high 16 kills for the Trojans, while hitting .333.
  • Kian Hollevoet posted 10 kills, hitting .280.
  • Jeff Yasalonis dished out 41 assists for Mount Olive.

UP NEXT

  • Tonight's match was the final match of the regular season for both teams.
  • The Conference Carolinas Quarterfinals will begin next Saturday and the bracket will be determined after Tuesday.
