Tornado tripped up at Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C. – The King University softball team dropped a pair of tight contests at Limestone College on Friday afternoon. The Saints scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning to take game one from the Tornado 2-0 before taking the nightcap 4-1.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS

  • Katie McCann paced the offense from the leadoff spot with three hits.
  • Jenna Burnett and Hannah Riddle posted two hits each with Burnett driving in one and Riddle scoring once.
  • Riddle also extended her hitting streak to 16 games.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • King had a leadoff runner on base in each of the first three innings, but couldn't push a run across.
  • In the second and third innings, the Tornado had a pair of runners on, but Saint pitcher Courtney Smith got out of the jam each time.
  • Tornado pitcher Leslie Odom retired the first seven batters she faced and didn't allow a hit until the Saints got a pair of knocks in the fourth inning. However, Odom got out of the inning to keep the game scoreless.
  • A two-out, pinch-hit double in the sixth from Limestone's Audra Butler broke the scoreless tie, scoring a pair to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.
  • Smith then got the Tornado in order in the seventh, giving Limestone the 2-0 victory.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • Limestone grabbed the lead in the third inning with three runs, two coming on a Siara Shelton single to center field.
  • Burnett got King on the board with a two-out single that scored Riddle in the fourth, cutting the Tornado deficit to 3-1.
  • However, the Saints added on an Emma Swearingen run-scoring single in the fifth, extending their lead back to 4-1.
  • King had a pair of runners in the fifth, but couldn't push a run across.
  • The Tornado couldn't get the offense going again as the Saints took the contest 4-1.

  • Siara Shelton drove in a pair in the nightcap for the Saints.

  • King returns to action on Tuesday when they host Converse College. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
  • Limestone travels to Emmanuel College on Thursday.
