Brokering's bomb gives King sweep of Mount Olive

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University softball team recorded their second straight Conference Carolinas sweep, taking a pair from the University of Mount Olive on Friday afternoon. The Tornado took game one 6-4 before Kay Brokering hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning of game two, giving King the 7-5 victory.

SERIES HIGHLIGHTS

  • Brokering ripped her sixth home run of the year, the game-winner in the sixth inning of the nightcap. She went 2-for-4 on the day with three walks and a hit by pitch.
  • Summer Hayes also hit a home run, her fourth of the year coming in game one. Hayes drove in a team-high four runs on the day.
  • Hannah Riddle posted three hits, extending her hitting streak to 20 games. She also scored five runs on the day.
  • Katie McCann, Hanna Adams and Jenna Burnett joined Riddle with three hits on the day.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mount Olive struck first in the third inning as Anna Ingram ripped a two-out, two-run home run.
  • However, the Tornado answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Back-to-back singles from McCann and Riddle started the inning and Brokering followed with a walk to load the bases.
  • Burnett evened the score with a two-run single and Hayes put King ahead 4-2 with a home run later in the inning.
  • In the fourth inning, Brokering extended the King lead with a sacrifice fly and Burnett ripped a two-out double to put the Tornado ahead 6-2.
  • Mount Olive scored one run in each the fifth and sixth innings, but Leslie Odom closed out the game, giving King the 6-4 victory.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Tornado jumped ahead early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Hayes made it a 3-0 King lead with a double to center field that scored Brokering from first.
  • King extended their lead with a pair of runs in the second inning, Burnett drove in one with an infield single and Hayes drove in Riddle with a sacrifice fly, putting the Tornado ahead 5-0.
  • However, Mount Olive answered with three runs in the third inning on three consecutive hits. Heather Childress ripped a triple, Ingram followed with a double off the wall and Alexis Hobson cut the deficit to 5-3 with a single.
  • King threatened with a pair of runners in the third, but couldn't push any runs across.
  • The Trojans evened the score on a Callie Ferrell two-run home run in the fifth inning.
  • In the sixth inning, Riddle started a rally with an infield single. Following a bunt, Brokering laced a two-run home run to left field, putting the Tornado ahead.
  • Rachel Farmer made it standup for the Tornado, getting the final three outs in the seventh, giving King the 7-5 victory.

FOR THE FOES

  • Ingram led the way for Mount Olive, recording three hits and driving in four.
  • Ferrell posted three hits and drove in two on the day.
  • Kayla Allen scored four runs from the leadoff spot for Mount Olive.

  • King is scheduled to host Barton College at 2:00 p.m. on Monday.
  • Mount Olive hosts Fayetteville State University on Wednesday afternoon.
