West's big night leads King past Erskine

BRISTOL, Tenn. –  The King University women's basketball team added another conference win to the books with a victory over Erskine College on Wednesday night. The Tornado used a stellar first half to build up a big lead and eventually cruised to an 83-64 victory over the Flying Fleet.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Period

  • King opened up the contest with 4-0 run after a Ryleigh Fritz layup followed by a Kori West basket.
  • Erskine answered with two baskets of their own, but the Tornado went on an 11-4 run halfway through the quarter to grab a 17-8 lead.
  • The Flying Fleet added a basket with four minutes remaining, but Ali Golden hit a jump shot to start a 7-4 run in the final minutes to give King a 24-14 lead going into the second quarter.

Second Period

  • The Tornado started to period off with a 5-0 run after two baskets from Golden and West and a Kiki Samsel free throw.
  • With five minutes remaining in the period, Julie Ford knocked down a layup to extend King's lead to 34-20.
  • Erskine's Zyria Gay added four free throws and Osha Makerson hit a triple to cut the Fleet deficit to nine.
  • However, West and Golden gave the Tornado a 41-28 lead at halftime with a layup and a triple in the final three minutes.

Third Period

  • Both teams traded shots in the opening minutes, but with 7:43 remaining in the quarter, King went on a 5-0 run after a Trinity Lee jump shot and a Samsel triple.
  • Lee extended the King lead to 53-38 after hitting a three-pointer halfway through the frame.  
  • Back-to-back triples from Samsel and Golden and a Lee basket stretched the Tornado advantage to 63-43 with 1:32 remaining in the quarter.
  • The Fleet added a few free throws towards the end of the period, but Fritz added a free throw to bring the King lead to 64-47.

Fourth Period

  • The Tornado lead stayed near 20 points for the entire fourth quarter as King took the 83-64 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • West led King with 27 points and 17 rebounds, her ninth double-double of the season.
  • Golden and Samsel followed with 15 points each.
  • Lee added 10 points and five rebounds.

FOR THE FOES

  • Gay led Erskine with 21 points and six rebounds while Alexis Scott scored 10 points and added eight rebounds.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • West tied her season-high with 27 points. She scored 27 points against North Greenville on January 15.
  • West also eclipsed 1,000 career points and now has 1,016 points in her career.

UP NEXT

  • King travels to Limestone College on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
  • Erskine travels to Belmont Abbey College on Saturday night.
