#4 Tornado dominate #6 Tiffin in season-opener

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The #4 King University women's wrestling team opened up their 2021 season with a 31-14 win over #6 Tiffin University. Both teams had more than half their line up filled with wrestlers who were nationally ranked and set the scene for some top notch wrestling action.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: #4 King 31, #6 Tiffin 14
LOCATION: Student Center Complex; Bristol, Tenn.
RECORDS: King 1-0; Tiffin 0-1
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • At 101 pounds #4 Jaclyn McNichols set the tempo with a 10-0 tech fall against #8 Shanna Morris in the first period to give King an early 4-0 lead
  • #6 Aleeah Gould put the second match away quickly as she grabs a pin in 1:36 to extend the team lead to 9-0
  • At 116 pounds Melanie Mendoza found her hands full early with #3 Sugey Ceja. After a push out score and a trio of takedowns Mendoza found herself down 7-0, but a really quick takedown to exposure tightened the score 7-4. Ceja would go on to win the match 9-4 and put Tiffin on the scoreboard
  • At 123 pounds #2 Cheyenne Sisenstein wrestled #8 Stephanie Mondragon who cut from 130 pounds. Sisenstein was able to rack up 8 points in the first period before putting the match away with another 10-0 Tornado tech fall
  • Ana Luciano came out in full force in the 136 pound weight class. After a nice double leg flair finish her opponent suffered an injury and medical forfeited. This increased King's lead to 23-3 and essentially locked in the dual win for the Tornado.
  • #3 Ashlynn Ortega naturally did not stop the momentum. She would score 9 in the first period and quickly end with an 11-0 tech fall to further increase King's lead
  • Arguably the most exciting match of the day was Tory Torres against #6 Taylor Hites. Torres was able to jump ahead 4-0 but Hites responded and tightened the lead to 4-3 in favor of Torres. But in the second period Torres went on a tear and finished the match with a huge 11-3 victory over a nationally ranked wrestler.
  • At 170 pounds Morgan Davidson would take a forfeit for Tiffin
  • The final match of the day would be at 190 pounds between #3 Nia Crosdale and #4 Jesse Lee. It was close early but eventually Tiffin would overcome King and win by pin in the first period.
UP NEXT
  • King returns to action when they host a quad on Sunday, January 17. Third-ranked Emmanuel College, seventh-ranked Colorada Mesa University and second-ranked McKendree University will be in attendance.
