Tornado comeback falls short at Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C. – The King University women's volleyball team started a week-long road trip with a match at Erskine College on Wednesday night. The Flying Fleet jumped ahead early and dictated the pace against the Tornado all night. King tried to fight back, but the comeback fell short as Erskine took the match 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • An early 5-0 run vaulted Erskine to a 6-1 lead in the opening stanza.
  • Erskine later used a 7-0 run to take an 18-6 lead as the Flying Fleet took the opening set 25-15.
Second Set
  • King opened up a 6-3 lead in the second set, but Erskine came back with three straight points to even the tally.
  • The Flying Fleet later broke a tie at nine with four straight points, and seven of the next nine to open up a 16-11 lead.
  • King tried to mount a rally late, but it wasn't enough as Erskine took the set 25-18.
Third Set
  • Three straight Tornado points, capped by a Zephanie Snyder kill gave King an early 9-6 lead.
  • Following a 3-0 Erskine run, King responded with five straight points, started by an Abigale Jayne kill.
  • A block from Jayne and Kara Miller gave King a 17-12 lead.
  • The teams traded 3-0 runs down the stretch before King scored the final two points to take the set 25-18.
Fourth Set
  • King held a slight lead early, but Erskine came back with four consecutive points to take a 9-7 advantage.
  • However, three straight King points, two on blocks from Julie Ward and Miller and Snyder and Miller gave the lead back to the Tornado at 10-9.
  • Erskine made their move with a 5-0 to take a 15-11 lead.
  • The Tornado tried to comeback with a 5-1 run late, but Erskine scored the final three points to take the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE FOR THE FOES
  • Katy Togerson led Erskine with 17 kills while Meredith Hollinger accounted for 15 kills and 17 digs.
  • Kaile Tuisamatatele added 14 kills and seven digs.
  • Laney Gaston handed out 42 assists and added 16 digs.
UP NEXT
  • King stays on the road this weekend, taking on Emmanuel College at 7:00 p.m. in Franklin Springs, Ga., on Friday. The Tornado then take on Southern Wesleyan University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Central, S.C.
  • Erskine hosts Young Harris College on Friday night.
