King falls at UNCP in four

PEMBROKE, N.C.- The King University women's volleyball team took to the road to take on one of the top teams in the Conference Carolinas East Division. The Tornado took the first set, but UNC Pembroke came back to take the 3-1 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • Back-to-back kills from Brittney Ramsey and Georgia Davis gave King an early 6-2 lead.
  • The Tornado later scored three straight points as an Abigail Belcher kill gave King a 9-5 lead.
  • However, UNC Pembroke came back with five straight points to take a 10-9 advantage.
  • Julie Ward accounted for consecutive kills before a Davis termination gave Kin ga 17-15 lead.
  • The Tornado advantage grew to 22-16 following a 5-0 King spurt.
  • On the run Davis recorded a kill and service ace.
  • UNC Pembroke used a 6-0 run to even the score at 23 before Ward came up with a kill.
  • Ramsey then gave King the 25-23 win with a block.
Second Set
  • A block from Abigale Jayne and Ramsey gave King a 3-2 lead, but the Braves responded with four straight points to regain the lead.
  • Later UNC Pembroke scored three straight points to take an 11-6 lead and force a King timeout.
  • A 6-0 UNC Pembroke run put the set out of reach as the Braves evened the match with the 25-12 victory.
Third Set
  • UNC Pembroke kept that momentum to start the third set, opening up a 6-1 lead and forcing a King timeout.
  • The Tornado deficit grew to 14-4 when King called for another timeout.
  • Out of the break, King started to chip away as a 6-1 run pulled the Tornado within 15-10 and forced a Brave timeout.
  • Ramsey had a kill on the run and teamed up with Allie Zimmerman for a block.
  • King again pulled within 18-13, but that was as close as they would get with UNC Pembroke winning the set 25-16.
Fourth Set
  • Back-to-back Tornado blocks gave King an early 3-1 lead. Ramsey and Jayne teamed up for the first one before Ramsey and Davis accounted for the second stuff.
  • King led 5-2, but UNC Pembroke used a 5-0 tun to take a 7-5 advantage before another Ward kill.
  • The Braves opened up a 14-10 lead before King rolled off four straight points to even the set at 14.
  • Ward served up an ace and added a kill on the spurt.
  • However, UNC Pembroke answered with four straight points and an 8-1 run.
  • The Tornado couldn't recover as the Braves took the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ward led King with 14 kills, 16 digs and two aces.
  • Davis followed with eight kills, 14 assists and 11 digs.
  • Ramsey added seven kills to go along with six blocks, one solo.
  • Claire Wilson posted 14 digs while Katie Harless handed out 15 assists and accounted for 11 digs.
FOR THE FOES
  • Brianna Warren led UNC Pembroke with 16 kills and five blocks, three solo. She also hit .500 in the match.
  • Shannon Skryd added 11 kills and 14 digs while Erin O'Donnell accounted for 10 kills.
  • Katie Pressley handed out 45 assists.
  • Elise Martin led the defense with 16 digs and Mariss Morgan followed with 15 digs.
UP NEXT
  • The Tornado stay on the road to take in Francis Marion University on Saturday afternoon. First serve from Florence, S.C. is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
