BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University softball team started their season by going 3-1 last week, and two individuals were honored following their performances.
Carly Turner was selected Conference Carolinas Player of the Week and
Nikole Counts was named Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) Pitcher of the Week.
Turner had a huge week in her Tornado debut, hitting .571, going 8-for-14. She added two home runs and a double to post and OPS of 1.671. One of her home runs came on Wednesday at Carson-Newman University, and the other, a two-run shot tied game one against UVA Wise at 2-2. Turner had a at least one hit in every game, going 3-for-4 with that home run in game one against UVA Wise. In the circle, she tossed two complete games, and earned her first win of the season in game two against UVA Wise. In Sunday's contest, she registered 12 strikeouts and only allowed one unearned run on five hits.
This is the first Conference Carolinas Weekly award for Turner this season.
Counts had a big opening week in the circle for the Tornado, going 2-0 with a 2.00 ERA with wins over regional rivals Carson-Newman University and UVA Wise. She started by allowing two runs on six hits and striking out three on Wednesday at Carson-Newman. Counts then tossed another complete game, scattering 10 hits and allowing only two runs while striking out nine in Sunday's win over UVA Wise.
This is the first career TSWA Pitcher of the Week award Counts has earned.
King is scheduled to be in action again on Wednesday when they host Lincoln Memorial University. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
