Tornado sweep LMC for 10th straight win

BANNER ELK, N.C. – In a nonconference match against rival Lees-McRae College, the King University women's volleyball team came away with another sweep for their 10th straight victory. Georgia Davis posted her second double-double of the week to lead the Tornado to the 3-0 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • King jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind a kill from Brittney Ramsey and a Katie Harless ace.
  • The lead swelled to 7-1 following a kill and ace from Julie Ward and a Hailee Blankenship kill.
  • However, Lees-McRae worked their way back and evened the score at 10 before King regained a 14-11 lead following another Harless ace.
  • The Tornado used five straight points, capped by a Davis ace to take a 21-16 lead before a block from Ramsey and Ward gave King the 25-18 victory.
Second Set
  • King used a pair of kills, ace and a block to score four straight points and take an early 5-3 lead in the second set.
  • However, the Bobcats countered and gained a 7-6 lead with three straight points as they held that advantage for the majority of the set.
  • Kayley Holtzclaw sparked a 6-0 King run that vaulted the Tornado from a 17-15 deficit to a 21-17 lead with a kill.
  • Blankenship capped the run with consecutive kills before Ward gave King the 25-21 victory with another kill.
Third Set
  • Lees-McRae scored the first three points and held the advantage in the early going.
  • The teams traded 3-0 runs in the middle of the set before a 4-0 King run gave the Tornado the separation they needed late in the set.
  • Ramsey and Blankenship came up with kills on the run that gave King an 18-15 lead.
  • Holtzclaw, Blankenship and Allie Zimmerman recorded three straight kills before an ace from Davis gave King a 22-16 lead.
  • Lees-McRae fought back to pull within two, but Holtzclaw came up with a kill to give King the 25-22 win and 3-0 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Blankenship led the Tornado with 11 kills while Ward followed with nine kills and 13 digs.
  • Holtzclaw chipped in with eight kills, hitting .357 and adding four blocks.
  • Ramsey added six blocks and five kills.
  • Davis handed out 19 assists and added 10 digs.
  • Abigail Shaffer posted 10 digs while Harless registered 17 assists.
FOR THE FOES
  • Hanna Steckler led Lees-McRae with eight kills while Alivia Larson followed with seven.
  • Caitlyn Smirne followed with six kills and 14 digs.
  • Carlee Allbaugh recorded 14 assists while Lauren Xayavong accounted for 15 digs.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The 10-match winning streak is the longest since King won 12 straight in 2013. That season the Tornado also had a 19-match winning streak.
