King takes road win over UVA Wise

WISE, Va. – The King University baseball team earned a road win over regional rival UVA Wise on Tuesday afternoon. The Tornado scored in the first four innings, taking the nonconference affair 15-6.

KING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Bennett McCann scored four runs on the day, going 2-for-3 as he drove in one. He also hit his first home run of the season.
  • Zachary Thomas drove in three and scored three times as he hit his first career home run.
  • Austin Meyer and Ethan Hawkins each drove in two runs on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jarrett Backus started the game with a single, but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.
  • McCann followed with a home run to left field, giving King a 1-0 lead.
  • UVA Wise responded with a run in the bottom of the inning as a one-out sacrifice fly evened the score at 1-1.
  • King regained the lead in the second inning as a Rob Sari walk and Wes Bonney double put a pair of runners on.
  • Thomas then ripped a home run to left field, giving King a 4-1 lead.
  • McCann worked a leadoff walk in the third and later scored on a Hawkins groundout.
  • Harrison Barger stretched the King lead to 6-1 with a double that scored Meyer.
  • The Cavaliers got those two runs back in the bottom of the inning on a two run home run from Tyler Campbell.
  • King added five runs in the fourth inning to take an 11-3 lead.
  • UVA Wised tallied two runs in the fourth and another run in the sixth to cut the Tornado lead to 11-6.
  • However, King scored three in the eighth, one on a David Carnicella double and two on a Meyer double, extending the King lead to 14-6.
  • The Tornado tacked on a run in the ninth to take the game 15-6.
FOR THE FOES
  • Campbell led UVA Wise with third runs batted in as he posted one hit on the day.
  • Tyler Blaum went 3-for-5, scoring one and driving in one.
  • Jojo Kelliher scored twice for the Cavaliers.
