Tornado fall in regular season finale

TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The King University women's volleyball team dropped their final match of the regular season Tuesday night, falling to North Greenville University 3-0.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
First set
  • The Tornado started the match with a 3-1 lead off kills from Abigail Belcher, Gracia Love and Hailee Blankenship.
  • North Greenville would eventually take a 6-5 lead, setting up a stretch where they would score eight of the net nine points to take a 12-6 advantage.
  • Coming out of a timeout, the Crusaders lead would grow to 17-7 before a kill from Zephanie Snyder stopped the scoring run.
  • The Crusaders had a 19-10 lead when an attack error gave King some momentum, as they pulled to 20-14.
  • North Greenville would eventually take the set, 25-17.
Second Set
  • Neither team was able to pull ahead early in the second set, with the largest lead being a 7-5 Tornado lead.
  • The Crusaders started to pull away a short time later, taking a 13-10 advantage before Bailey Fersner picked up a kill to narrow the gap to 13-11.
  • After that, North Greenville would score three straight points to go ahead 16-11.
  • NGU continued to extend their lead, including scoring three consecutive points to force the Tornado to call timeout, down 22-15.
  • Coming out of the timeout, the Tornado scored three straight points to get to within 22-19.
  • The Crusaders would score the final three points to take the set 25-19.
Third Set
  • Coming out of the set break, the Crusaders scored 10 straight points before a Katie Harless kill broke the scoring streak.
  • The Tornado then went on a scoring streak of their own, quickly narrowing the gap to 11-6, forcing a North Greenville timeout.
  • Coming out of the timeout, the Crusaders continued to expand their lead, eventually working their way to a 23-12 lead.
  • King started to battle late in the set, as an attack error by NGU and a kill from Blankenship brought them to within 23-14, but the Crusaders would score the final two points of the set to win it 25-14, and take the match 3-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Blankenship led the Tornado attack, recording 10 kills, along with a block and three digs.
  • Harless had 15 set assists, along with a pair of service aces and six digs.
FOR THE FOES
  • Abigail Durham had 19 kills to lead the Crusaders, along with nine digs.
  • Ashlyn Conner had 12 digs, while also handing out 33 assists and recording five aces.
UP NEXT
  • King will host the opening rounds of the Conference Carolinas tournament Saturday afternoon. The Tornado will host Lees-McRae vs Converse at 2 p.m. before taking on the winner at 4:30 p.m.
  • North Greenville advances directly to the Conference Carolinas semifinals on Nov. 11-12
