King sweeps #15 Lincoln Memorial

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University softball team picked up a pair of wins over #15 Lincoln Memorial University Wednesday afternoon. These are the first sweep for the Tornado over a ranked team since April 20, 2018 when they beat then-no. 7 Lenoir-Rhyne.

KING HIGHLIGHTS GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • Lincoln Memorial started with a pair of two-out runners in the first inning, but Nikole Counts left them stranded there.
  • Counts stranded a leadoff runner in the second before the Tornado offense got going in the second.
  • Camryn Haag started a two-out rally with a single, and Peyton Day followed with a single.
  • Lawson then laced a three-run home run to left field, giving King a 3-0 lead.
  • A pair of hit-by-pitches and a double got the Railsplittes on the board in the sixth.
  • Lincoln Memorial added two more on wild pitches to even the score at three.
  • Carly Turner started the bottom half of the sixth inning with a single before a one-out single from Rikkelle Miller.
  • Tinsley Thompson then singled to score pinch runner Samantha Helms.
  • Haag later came up with a two-out single that scored Thompson and gave King a 5-3 lead going to the seventh.
  • That run proved to be big as Sierra Hucklebee laced a home run in the seventh before Marleigh Duncan got the final two outs to give King the 5-4 win.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Tornado didn't waste any time in scoring, as they plated a pair before the Railsplitters even recorded an out.
  • The game started with Campbell singling, advancing to second on a wild pitch. She scored when Turner laced a single to left field, putting King up 1-0.
  • The next batter was Miller, who singled through the right side, scoring Turner and pushing the lead to 2-0.
  • LMU got one of the runs back in the top of the second on a two-out home run before tying the game in the third on an RBI single.
  • The Railsplitters took the lead in the fourth on a double play ground ball.
  • The fourth inning was huge for King, as they scored three runs on three hits, including an RBI hit by pitch credited to Erin Foster and an RBI fielder's choice. Turner also singled, pushing across the fifth run of the game, making the score 5-3.
  • LMU would have multiple scoring chances late, but the Railsplitters left six on base in the final three innings, including the seventh, when they had runners on first and second before a groundout ended the game.

FOR THE FOES
  • Katie Tuggle and Katy Pozzuto were both 2-for-6, with Pozzuto contributing a home run.
  • Sierra Hucklebee also had a homer, going 2-for-7 on the day.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The win is King's first win over a ranked team since they defeated 11th-ranked Lincoln Memorial 13-5 last February.
  • It is also the first time since April 20, 2018 that the Tornado have swept a ranked team.

  • King travels to Limestone University on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. in Gaffney, S.C.
