King falls to Barton, 3-1

WILSON, N.C. – Jackson Carroll finished with seven digs Saturday afternoon, but the King University men's volleyball team closed their roadtrip with a 3-1 Conference Carolinas loss to Barton.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • Barton controlled the set early, racing out to a 11-4 lead, forcing King to call a timeout.
  • The Bulldogs would extend their lead to 16-6 coming out of the break.
  • King won two points in a row, including a solo block by Kellan Kennedy that pulled them to within 16-8, but Barton would quickly re-open another 10-point lead, taking an 18-8 advantage.
  • Barton was able to continue to pull ahead, eventually scoring the final five points of the set, winning 25-11.
Second Set
  • After trading points at the start of the set, Barton would take a 10-9 lead on a kill, going on a 5-1 run to take a 15-10 lead.
  • After the lead reached 17-12, Carroll would pick up a kill, followed by an attack error that brought King to within 17-14.
  • Barton would take a 23-16 lead before King took consecutive points, including a kill by Carroll that forced a Bulldogs timeout.
  • King would take another point after the break, but Barton quickly moved to set point, up 24-19 before taking the set 25-20.
Third Set
  • After Barton took an early 5-1 lead, King got a point off a service error, before a Barton attack error made the score 5-3.
  • The Bulldogs would pull ahead 10-7 before Warren Davis posted three kills, which when coupled with an attack error gave King a 11-10 lead.
  • The set was tied at 14 when Carroll picked up a kill, giving King a 15-14 lead, which was immediately followed with a Drooker service ace.
  • King would get to set point, up 24-22 before the Bulldogs scored a point on a block, pulling to within 24-23 with King calling timeout.
  • Aaron Milstead ended the set with a quick kill, making the match 2-1 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Fourth Set
  • Barton took an early 4-1 lead before the Tornado scored five points in a row to take a 6-4 lead.
  • The Bulldogs would rally to tie the set at seven before taking a 9-7 advantage.
  • After taking a 12-9 lead, the Bulldogs stretched the lead to 15-12.
  • The lead would reach 20-17, where Drooker and Mason Martindale would go back-to-back on kills, with Martindale adding another one a short time later to pull King to within 21-20.
  • Barton would close the set on a 4-1 run, taking the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Carroll had 17 kills to lead the Tornado, with Davis adding 10 and Kennedy recording six.
  • Drooker had seven digs, while Milstead had three blocks, two of which were solo blocks.
FOR THE FOES
  • Brandon Johnston posted a double-double, with 15 kills and 13 digs to lead the Bulldogs.
  • Benjamin Wiechert had 13 kills, with two digs and three blocks.
  • Seth Deppe handed out 39 set assists.
UP NEXT
  • The Tornado will return to the Student Center Tuesday and Wednesday, hosting nonconference matchups with Lincoln Memorial and Queens. Tuesday's match vs LMU will start at 7 p.m.
  • Barton will play at George Mason in their next match on March 4.
