BRISTOL, Tenn. – The ninth-seeded King University women's basketball team squared off with fifth seed Chowan University on Monday night in the second round of the Atlantic Casualty Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Championship. The homestanding Hawks used runs to start the second and third quarters to pull away from the Tornado and take the contest 94-73.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Period
  • The teams traded triples in the early going as Michelle Gallegos connected from long range for the Tornado.
  • However, Chowan scored the next eight points after the Gallegos trifecta to take an 8-3 lead three minutes into the contest.
  • King scored six straight points as a pair of Tori Smiley free throw evened the score at 13 with three minutes remaining in the quarter.
  • However, Chowan outscored King 8-2 down the stretch, including the final three points to take a 21-15 lead into the second quarter.
Second Period
  • The Hawk run continued as Chowan scored the first seven points of the period, making it a 10-0 run in total to take a 28-15 lead two minutes into the period.
  • The King deficit stayed around 10 the majority of the period until the Hawks pulled away down the stretch.
  • A Chowan triple extended their lead to 21 before Smiley scored in the final seconds, cutting the King deficit to 53-34 at the half.
  • King shot 33.3 percent from the floor in the opening half while Chowan shot 51.4 percent.
Third Period
  • Chowan started the quarter with eight straight points before going on another 8-0 run to take a 69-36 lead following the 16-2 spurt over the first five minutes.
  • Jhayda McKinney ended the spurt and started a 6-0 King run with a layup before baskets from MyKeria Johnson and Aroa Garcia.
  • Allen converted a three-point play at the end of the quarter, but Chowan led 73-45 going to the fourth period.
Fourth Period
  • King went on an 11-0 run started by an Allen three-point play that was followed by a Jaelyn West triple and layup.
  • A Jada Campbell trifecta pulled King with 81-58 midway through the period.
  • However, the Hawks held their lead there to take the contest 94-73.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Smiley led the Tornado with 16 points while Allen followed with another double-double.
  • Allen scored 10 points and added 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double.
  • West and Johnson followed with eight points each.
FOR THE FOES
  • Destiny Robinson led Chowan with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Aniah Patterson followed with 15 points and four assists.
  • Meara Carter added 13 points and eight rebounds while Demetria Bland added 12 points.
  • Imani Hickman chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The double-double for Allen is her second of the season.
