BRISTOL, Tenn. – King University Vice President for Athletics David Hicks has hired Trevor Cameron as the first head coach of women's flag football in school history. Cameron comes to King from nearby Milligan University, where he was a key part of building the Buffaloes flag football program.
"It's an honor to be chosen to help build and develop Women's Flag Football," Cameron said. "This sport is an opportunity for the university, young women, and the community all to come together and unify in ways never done before. I believe this program has the backing and support needed to become the best in the country, along with commitment to become the best.
"The Tornado family has been welcoming and encouraging since the day I stepped into the building and I can express my gratitude and excitement to work besides some of the best in the business. Can not wait to get to work and show the world what King University Flag Football has to come."
Cameron, a 2023 graduate of Milligan, has worked as a student assistant and graduate assistant at Milligan since Aug. 2020. During the 2023-24 season, the Buffaloes posted the best season in program history, finishing 9-8, with two wins over Point University, and wins over Life University and Baker College.
"Trevor's passion for impacting the lives of students in a positive manner through flag football quickly became evident during our search for our first women's flag football coach, making him a perfect match for King," Hicks said. "His knowledge of flag football and experience and contributions towards building a successful program will quickly establish King as one of the top women's flag football teams in the country. I can't wait to see them on the field next Spring!"
Cameron spent the summer of 2023 working as a Box Office Intern with the Elizabethton River Riders. While a student at Milligan, he earned his bachelor's in sports management and exercise science, while compiling a 3.0 GPA. Cameron is currently enrolled in graduate school at Milligan. He also competed on the Milligan esports team, including being the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representative for the Buffaloes.
King University announced the addition of women's flag football as the 29th varsity sport in July, along with Conference Carolinas, which became the first Division II conference to sponsor flag football as a sport.
The Tornado will play inside the new track and field complex on campus. Teams will consist of seven members wearing tightly fixed flag belts with sockets and two pop flags on either side of the hips. Players will compete on a 40- by 80-yard field for four 12-minute quarters. Teams score 6 points for a touchdown and can gain an extra 1-2 points for a set play from the 5- or 10-yard lines. The offense has 4 downs to go 20 yards to get a new set of downs, and 4 downs to score.
