Eight Tornado place at Glenville State Invite

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Trent Mahoney finished second on Saturday as the King University men's wrestling team opened the 2024-25 season at the Glenville State Invite. The Tornado had a total of eight placewinners on the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Mahoney finished second at 165 pounds, winning his first three matches of the day. He started with a first period fall of Dalton Minnick of Glenville State before beating Nicholas Bennet of Millersville 7-1. He then won his semifinal match 17-2 over Emmanuel's Gage Shetley before dropping an 8-2 decision to Guy Deleonardis of Glenville State in the championship.
• Clint Morrisette placed third at 174 pounds, winning his first three matches, including a 1:28 pin of Mark Matysek of Frostburg State. After dropping his semifinal match, he won the third-place match via injury default.
• At 184 pounds, returning national qualifier Ethan Lopez won his first two matches of the day, including a 2:23 pin of Gavin Rodriguez-Cayro of Davis & Elkins to start the day. After dropping a narrow 2-1 decision in the semifinals, he won the third-place match via injury default.
• Making his King debut, Nathan Coley placed fifth, starting his day with a 6-3 decision over Frostburg State's Cole Yonkin before falling in the quarterfinals.
• In the consolation rounds, he picked up a first period pin over Emory & Henry's Evan Alger before winning a 5-3 decision in the consolation semifinal. He then won the fifth-place match via medical forfeit.
• Brennan Watkins placed seventh at 157 pounds, winning his first two matches of the day, 19-1 over Zane Perkins of Emory & Henry and 11-2 over Belmont Abbey's Alex Ropski.
• After a pair of losses, he earned a 10-7 win over Cade Johnson of Kentucky Wesleyan to take seventh.
• Ashtan Hendricks rattled off three straight wins in the consolation bracket at 141 pounds, including pins of Malikai Badillo of Glenille State and Elias Smith of Millersville before winning 16-9 over Frostburg Stat''s Chase Bell. After falling in the consolation semifinals, he dropped a 11-9 decision to place eighth.
• Wrestling at 174 pounds, Vincent Galang rallied after a 5-2 loss to start the day, winning four straight matches before dropping a 19-3 tech fall to place eighth.
• Joe Bertrand finished fourth at 157 pounds, winning a 6-1 decision over Evan Davis of Ashland and an 11-1 major decision win over Wiley Houser of Glenville State.
• Roberto Garcia had a pair of wins, including a win via pin over Orlando Hernandez of Emory & Henry, but fell short of placing.
• Tyson Upchurch, wrestling at 125 pounds, had two wins on the day, both of which were via fall. After dropping his opening match, Upchurch pinned Belmont Abbey's Daniel Graham before beating Devin Fowler of Salem.
• At 133 pounds, Alex Fernandez III had a pair of wins via decision, a 10-3 win over Luke Shaffer of Davis & Elkins and a 7-4 victory over Ashland's Rylen Campbell.
• At 141 pounds, Gavin Qualls had two wins via pin over conference opponents. In the wrestleback rounds, he pinned Logan Arnold of Emory & Henry in 0:53 before beating Brice Barton of Emmanuel in 1:15.
