Tornado sweep opening day of Patriot Duals

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The #3 King University women's wrestling team went 3-0 Friday at the first day of the Patriot Duals. The Tornado beat #22 Tiffin before handling Life University Black and Indiana Tech to win their pool.

HOW IT HAPPENED - #22 Tiffin
  • King took the first four bouts, including pins by Dianna Holmes and #2 Montana DeLawder, putting King in front 18-1.
  • After Tiffin won at 131 pounds, the Tornado won the next two matches, including #1 Claire DiCugno winning via 1:00 pin at 145 pounds.
  • After a King forfeit, the Tornado took the final two matches, with #9 Alexa Garcia earning a 10-0 win at 180 pounds to give the Tornado a 36-11 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Life University Black
  • King won nine of the 10 bouts, including three straight wins via tech fall to start the dual before DeLawder won via pin at 124 pounds, putting the Tornado ahead 22-0.
  • The Tornado won a pair of forfeits before DiCugno won via 14-4 tech fall, extending the lead to 31-1.
  • At 180 pounds, Garcia won 10-0 before King claimed a forfeit win at 207 pounds, winning the dual 40-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED – Indiana Tech
  • #9 Mia Zuniga started the dual with a 12-8 decision over Makayla Young, with Holmes winning 13-0 at 110 pounds.
  • At 117 pounds, #6 Clare Boe pinned her opponent in 3:45, with DeLawder winning a tech fall at 124 pounds to make the score 16-2.
  • The Tornado won consecutive pins at 131 and 138, including #7 Anna DiCugno needing just 52 seconds to pin Andrea Hernandez.
  • After C. DiCugno won a tech fall at 145 pounds and King forfeited 160 pounds, Garcia won a 9-0 decision at 180 pounds, securing a 33-12 win for the Tornado.

  • King won their pool, and now will wait to find out their opponent for the second day of the event, which will be held Saturday morning.
