King sweeps twinbill from Wheeling

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University softball team earned another doubleheader sweep on Monday afternoon, topping Wheeling University. The Tornado held on to take game one 5-4 Savana Luper tossed a complete game to give King the 6-1 victory in the nightcap.

KING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jessica Campbell led King with four hits on the day and drove in four runs, three in game one.
  • Haylee Dye registered two hits on the day and drove in four in game two.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • Wheeling grabbed the early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run from Madison Kay in the first inning.
  • Staley Vaught got King on the board with a bases loaded walk I the second.
  • Campbell then gave King a 3-2 lead with a two-run single to center field.
  • Wheeling used a squeeze bunt to even the score at 3-3 in the fourth inning.
  • A Cardinal defensive miscue allowed the Tornado to take the lead in the fifth inning before a Campbell double in the sixth scored Vaught and gave King a 5-3 lead.
  • Wheeling scored one run and had runners on second and third with one out in the seventh inning.
  • However, Hannah Fritts got the final two outs to give King the 5-4 win.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • Wheeling manufactured a run, scoring on a groundout in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.
  • King answered in the bottom half of the inning as Gracelynn Rice drove in one before a Campbell sacrifice fly gave King a 2-1 lead as Vaught scored.
  • In the fourth, Dye laced a double with the bases loaded that scored three and extended the King lead to 5-1.
  • A Dye sacrifice fly in the sixth scored Campbell, extending the Tornado lead to 6-1.
  • Luper the retired the side in order, giving King the 6-1 win.
