Belmont Abbey tops King

BELMONT, N.C. – The King University women's basketball team fell to Belmont Abbey on the road on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • Williams, Ellington, and Williams each hit a basket to help King score 7 points, but Belmont Abbey outscored the visiting team 16-7 in the opening frame.
Second Quarter
  • Jaelyn West scored King's first points of the second quarter with a jump shot. West was responsible for 7 of the Tornado's 13 points.
  • However, Belmont Abbey led 31-20 at the break.
Third Quarter
  • Mariya Williams and Sarah Thompson combined for six straight points in just over a minute of game time to bring the deficit to seven with 6:37 to go in the third quarter.
  • Belmont Abbey took a 51-36 lead to finish the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
  • The Crusaders and the Tornado matched each other's shots for the entirety of the fourth quarter.
  • Ashley Allen accounted for half of King's points shooting 3-5 from the floor. Those six points were her only points of the night.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Sarah Thompson led the Tornado with 14 points and dished out 5 assists.
  • Ashley Allen pulled down a game-high 8 rebounds, evenly disturbed on the offensive and defensive ends of the court.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • The Crusaders had three double-digit scorers with Peyton Nation leading the way with 15. She also had a team-high 7 rebounds.
  • Nation and Cate Schieber each grabbed 3 steals while Schieber and Abigail Crain had five assists each.
 
UP NEXT
The women's basketball team is back on the road on January 25th as they travel to Florence, S.C. to take on Francis Marion.
