Bristol, Tenn. The King University Softball team took on Fairmont State this afternoon with a two-game sweep to bring back a winning record for King. The Tornado, after a tough weekend, earned a 3-2 first-game win and a 7-6 second-game victory.
Â
Game One:
Â
In the first game, King was able to score early with some smart base running and even better hits from the Tornado team, leading 1-0 after the first inning. The pitchers from both teams were able to hold strong and not allow any other team to score a run besides Fairmont's fourth-inning run coming in.
Â
After having some close calls with the teams having runners on third and second throughout the game, they went to extra innings with Fairmont up first. The Falcons were able to score during their at-bat with a sacrifice fly out to right field to score a run. King would respond with a double to center field by
Giana Winge to score
Sophia Waters.
Yuleesa Kennedy would come up to bat, hitting the walk-off double to right field, where Winge would make it home.
Â
On the mound for King was
Kaylee Meeks with an outstanding first two inning throwing five strikeouts of the first six outs for the team. She would go on to throw a total of eight innings on the day and only let up one earned run.
Â
Winge was a power hitter this afternoon for King with two hits, two runs, and an RBI.
Aviah Bunsic and
Aubrey King both added two hits for the Tornado.
Â
Winge, Kennedy, and King all were able to hit doubles.
Â
Game Two:
Â
After the first game, King was eying up the sweep to push their record back to .500. With a stalemate through the first three innings with no scores, it took Fairmont scoring in the fourth inning to get the scoring action going. King responded to the Falcons' one run with five of their own as King was able to make Fairmont use three different pitchers in that inning.
Â
Fairmont would cut the lead down in the sixth by scoring one run; however, King would add another two to make the score 7-2. The Falcons started to mount a comeback in the seventh inning with four runs scored before King had two outs, making the comeback look very threatening. King would switch in
Makayla Ramsey to pitch to get the final two outs and win the ball game. Â
Â
Sophia Waters earned the win on the mound today with two strikeouts and allowed only two earned runs.
Riley Lamb and
Makayla Ramsey both assisted in keeping King in the lead for the win.
Â
Katie Ryan and Winge both had big hits, a double and a triple, respectively.
Â
Bunsic led the Tornado in hitting with two RBIs, two hits, and a run of her own.
Alena Demakas was able to get one RBI, one hit, and one run. With Ryan being able to add another two RBIs for King.
