MBB NCAA Probation

In September 2020, the King University men's basketball program was placed on probation by the NCAA for infractions which occurred between the 2013-14 through the 2017-18 academic years. The full public notice can be found here.

King University discovered these violations, conducting a thorough internal investigation, and self-reported them to the NCAA. We then fully cooperated with the NCAA during their own investigation, and self-imposed the majority of the penalties, some before the NCAA issued their decision.

The infractions included
  • Violations in the university's work study program, which involved 28 student athletes who logged inaccurate work-study hours and therefore received in excess of $22,000 of pay they did not earn, from fall 2013 through spring 2017.
  • Impermissible recruiting benefits, provided by a former associate head coach, to two prospects, which involved substantial edits to admissions essays used to determine a prospect's admissibility to King. In addition, one of the prospects stayed at the former associate head coach's home and received meals and cost-free tutoring.
  • Academic misconduct regarding an enrolled student-athlete, when the former associate head coach substantially edited a take-home exam.
  • The former head coach was cited for failure to promote an atmosphere for rules compliance and monitor his staff.
Penalties to King University
  • Three years of probation, during which time King is required to submit annual reports verifying and attesting to NCAA rules compliance.
  • Reduction in men's basketball scholarships for 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years, 1.5 scholarships per year.
  • Vacation of records in which ineligible student-athletes competed between 2013-14 and 2017-18.
