BRISTOL, Tenn. – In a mid-week, non-conference matchup between the King Tornado and the Brevard College Tornados, the Navy and Scarlett battled to a 10-5 win to remain unbeaten at home this season. Daniel Glenn tossed 6.2 innings in his third win of the year while Bryant Walker led the team offensively with a 3-for-4 day at the plate.
Trailing 2-0 in the second inning, Tyler Gaby (Bristol, Tenn.) tied up the game with a two-RBI triple, legging out a ball that rolled all the way into the right field corner. King broke the game open in the third inning, putting up a four spot in the frame.
The middle of the order answered the call after a brief rain delay. Carl Roberts (Blountville, Tenn.) hit a deep shot to the gap in right center field. After advancing to third on a wild pitch and a walk to Danny Laperna, Roberts scored on a grounder to short to take a 3-2 lead. Bryant Walker (Knoxville, Tenn.) painted the line in right and legged out a triple, scoring two more runs for the hosts. King tacked on a sixth run when Walker scored from third on a ground out on the following at bat.
Both teams swapped runs in the fourth to take the game to a 7-3 score. Roberts notched his second hit with a RBI single to center field, scoring Garrett Cook (Luray, Va.) who got on base with a double.
After Shane Timberlake singled home a run in the fifth inning to take an 8-3 lead, King tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Walker and Doug Freeman led the inning back-to-back extra-base hits off of Brevard reliever Troy Marlowe. Walker hit a shot to right center and pulled out a triple before being hit home by Freeman's double down the left field line. Timberlake notched his second RBI of the day via a sacrifice fly. After the two-run inning, King held a 10-5 lead before turning it over to the bullpen.
Daniel Glenn (Pineville, N.C.) threw 6.2 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits while striking out a pair in his third win of the season. Accompanied by strong defensive plays highlighted by third baseman Stephen Mullins, the Tornado improved to 18-9 on the season. Mullins had three plays where he charged slow-rolling ground balls and made the put out at first throwing on the run, two coming on barehanded snares while charging the plate.
The bullpen trio of David Pritchard, Dustin Pannell, and Danny Laperna combined for 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to preserve the win for King. After Laperna walked the leadoff batter of the ninth inning, he struck out the final three Brevard batters to close the game out and keep King unbeaten at home.
With the win, King (18-9) now has a six-game winning streak going into their conference series at Erskine College. They keep intact their home winning streak that now is 11 games strong this season. The Tornado will take on the Flying Fleet beginning this Friday (March 23) at 2:00 p.m. in Due West, S.C. They will close out the weekend with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
