Late Offensive Surge Drives Comeback Win Over Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. – Bryant Walker and Garrett Cook were quick to erase a one run lead the Tornados of Brevard College held over King College in the last inning of Wednesday's afternoon affair. King defeated Brevard in round two of the "Tussle of the Tornados", scoring twice in the top of the ninth to take a 5-4 victory away from Gil Coan Field.

King entered the ninth inning trailing 4-3 and down to their final three outs. Bryant Walker (Knoxville, Tenn.) entered the game to pinch hit in the nine hole as Brevard called on Zach Huneycutt to close out the game. Down 1-2 in the count, Walker took the following offering the other way and poked a drive to the right center field gap for a double. Turning over the lineup, sophomore Garrett Cook drove home the tying run with rope down the left field line for two bags on a 2-0 pitch, plating Walker.

Going back to small ball, Cody Snyder advanced Cook to third with a sacrifice bunt. Junior Josh Huffman helped post the eventual game-winning run with a high fly to center field deep enough to score Cook from third on a sacrifice fly.

King kept with David Pritchard on the mound to close out the game as he entered his second inning of relief work. After allowing a leadoff single, Brevard put the game-winning run at first on a walk with one out but Pritchard (2-0) downed the next two hitters to preserve the win. The senior from Hamilton, Ohio struck out Randy O'Dell swinging and forced pinch hitter Chris Christopoulos to fly out to center field to end the game and earn his second win of the season.

The Navy and Scarlett fell behind 3-0 after a pair of first-inning singles put two across the board in Brevard's first trip to the plate and following when Kameron Armacost tallied one of his four hits on the day, a run-scoring single to plate home their third run of the game.

Walks and hit batsmen helped King pull within a run when Brevard starting pitcher Joseph Lepore hit Doug Freeman to lead off the inning and then walked three straight with one out in the inning to give King a free run. Huffman then hit the first of two sacrifice hits with a liner deep enough to score Tyler Orndorff from third base to cut the lead to one run, 3-2.

Both teams swapped runs in the sixth inning, beginning with Jarrod Payne's RBI single through the right side to score Tyler Gaby, who reached base on an error by Brevard shortstop Cody Queen. Brevard earned the run back when Armacost dropped down a bunt single that scored a run on the play.

Doug Glenn (Pineville, N.C.) started the game on the hill for King and went 5.0 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits. Brandon Houser tossed two innings of relief, allowing one run.

Stephen Mullins and Doug Freeman led King with two hits apiece. Josh Huffman recorded two RBI in the win.

The victory is King's second over Brevard this season after defeating the Tornados 10-5 at home on March 21. King is now 19-12 overall on the season and will head into the weekend series with Limestone with an 8-7 record in Conference Carolinas play. The Saints and Tornado will begin their series with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31 at the King College Baseball Complex.
