Eagles hit their way past Tornado

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University baseball team took on Carson-Newman University in a non-conference matchup. The Eagles jumped ahead early only to see King come back. However, Carson-Newman registered 18 hits en route to the 13-8 victory.

The Eagles (19-24) got on the board early with an unearned run in the first inning. Carson-Newman extended the lead in the second inning as Cody Fox led off with a triple and scored on a Trace Rogers single. The Eagles plated two more runs to extend the lead to 4-0 after two innings.

In the third inning, Logan Schmidt ignited the King offense with a leadoff bunt single, and Tyler Gaby followed with a walk. Steven Todoschuk came up next a crushed a home run over the left center field fence to cut the deficit to just one run. Later in the inning Josh Huffman scored an error to even the score at 4-4.

However, the Eagles answered with four runs of their own in the top of the fourth inning. Bryan Everhart came up with a two-run single through the left side to highlight the inning.

King (27-17) cut into the deficit again in the fifth inning. With runners on first and second, Geoffrey Cieslewitz laced a two-out double to left field that scored Garrett Cook and Carl Roberts to make the score 8-6.

Carson-Newman broke the game open in the seventh inning when they plated five runs. The frame was highlighted by an Even Kirkpatrick single through the right side, and the Eagles led 13-6.

The Tornado plated a run on a Cieslewitz single to center field in the seventh inning, and Anthony McCoy sparked a two-out rally in the ninth inning. After a walk, Alex Azeredo ripped a single through the right side to score McCoy and cut the deficit to five. However, the Tornado couldn't push across any more runs, falling 13-8.

Cieslewitz paced the Tornado offense, going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in while Huffman and Roberts recorded two hits apiece.

King will wrap up regular season play this weekend when they host North Greenville University. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
