King drops rubber game at Francis Marion

FLORENCE, S.C – The King University baseball team took on Francis Marion University in the rubber game of their three game series on Sunday afternoon after the teams split a doubleheader on Saturday. The Tornado jumped out to an early lead behind a two-run from Garrett Cook, but the Patriots came storming back to take the contest 5-2.

Alex Azeredo led off the third inning with a single up the middle before he was sacrificed to second by Logan Schmidt. Following an out, Cook came up with the two-out, two-run blast over the left center field fence to give King (1-8) a 2-0 lead after three innings.

Francis Marion (7-2) got on the board in the fifth inning as JD Crowe evened the score with a one-out sacrifice fly to center field before Michael Wilson came up with the bases loaded. Wilson dropped a double down the left field line that scored two, giving the Patriots a 4-2 lead before the Tornado got out of the inning. The Patriots tacked on an unearned run in the sixth to stretch their lead to 5-2.

Azeredo and Schmidt tried to spark a two-out rally in the seventh, but they both were stranded. King couldn't muster any offense against the tough Francis Marion pitching staff the rest of the way as the Patriots took the game 5-2.

Cook, Tyler Gaby, Justin Trent, Azeredo and Schmidt all registered hits for the Tornado with Cook driving in two. Reiss Stanley got the start on the hill and tossed six innings, allowing five runs, four earned on seven hits while striking out five.

King is scheduled to open their home schedule on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. when they host crosstown rival Virginia Intermont College.
