BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced their all-conference awards this week and two Tornado were selected. Tony Valdes and George Helbig both garnered honorable mention All-ECAC honors.
Valdes had a great senior season, earning all-conference honors for the first time in his career. The Miami, Fla., native led the Tornado ranking 12th in the league with a .348. He also ranked eighth in the conference with 14 doubles and sixth with three triples. That resulted in a .638 slugging percentage, which ranked him eighth in the league. Valdes ranked ninth in the conference with 30 walks and fourth with an on base percentage of .484.
Among Tornado, Valdes ranked third with 12 multiple-hit games, six with two hits and six with three hits. He also drove in three runs in a game three times and had a total of four multiple-RBI games. Valdes ended his career on a 10-game hitting streak.
Helbig was solid on the mound all season for the Tornado and earns all-conference honors for the first time in his career. The senior went 5-2, ranking 10th in the league in wins and eighth with a 3.80 ERA. He also tossed 71 innings, ranking him seventh in the league while his two complete games were fifth in the conference.
He tossed back-to-back complete games, first falling to fifth-ranked North Greenville University 4-3. In the game, he allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out five. He followed that with a 5-2 win over Erskine on Senior Day where he only allowed two unearned runs on five hits in nine innings. The Davie, Fla., native closed his career with a season-high eight strikeouts at Limestone.
