BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University baseball team went 4-0 last week, and on Tuesday the Tornado swept the Conference Carolinas Player and Pitcher of the Week awards. Erik Calderon Jr. garnered pitcher of the week honors after posting two saves while Bennett McCann hit .625 last week to earn player of the week honors.
In three outings last week, Calderon only allowed two hits and posted two saves. He struck out three batters in each of his three outings, spanning three and two-thirds innings. In the first outing he threw the final one and two-thirds innings of King's 12-6 win at Carson-Newman, handing the Eagles their first loss of the season. On Saturday he earned the save in both ends of a doubleheader sweep of Salem University. In each game, he didn't allow and hit and punched out three Tiger hitters.
McCann had a big week, starting with three hits, including his second home run of the season, and two runs scored in a 12-6 win at Carson-Newman. McCann followed that by going 4-for-5 with three runs scored in a win over Salem on Saturday. He closed the week by ripping a triple and double in a win over Salem where he scored one and drove in one. For the week he hit a blistering .625 with 10 hits, six runs scored and four runs batted in.
This marks the first weekly award for each in their careers.
