Balanced attack leads King past Salem

SALEM, W.Va. – The King University men's basketball team used a balance effort to defeat Salem University on Saturday night. The Tornado had an answer every time the Tigers tried to get back into the contest, and held off a late Salem run to take the contest 84-78.

  • King trailed 6-2 early, but Je'Don Young drilled a triple to start a run and capped the 8-0 spurt with another triple, giving King a 10-6 advantage.
  • The game was tight throughout the first half, and Shon'Dre Dukes capped a 7-0 King run with a dunk that put the Tornado ahead 23-18.
  • Kalen Clifton tried to give King separation over the final five minutes of the stanza, scoring 10 straight points, giving King their largest lead of the half at 36-23.
  • On the spurt, Clifton drilled a trifecta and threw down a dunk before capping the run with a steal and layup.
  • The Tornado held their lead there and led 40-31 at halftime.
  • Salem opened the second half on a run, scoring eight straight points to cut their deficit to 42-39.
  • However, Timothy Taylor and drilled a triple and Mack Owens followed with a layup to stretch the Tornado advantage back to eight.
  • The Tigers later got within two, but King had an answer, scoring nine of the next 11 points coming on a trifecta from Taylor and two triples from Jordan Floyd.
  • Dukes gave King their largest lead of the second half at 79-69 with a layup with five minutes remaining.
  • Salem tried to make a run down the stretch, but the Tornado held off the spurt to take the 87-78 victory.
  • Floyd led five Tornado scorers in double figures with 15 points.
  • Taylor followed with 14 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
  • Young added 13 points, Clifton scored 12 points and Dukes chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds.


  • Reggie Olive led four Tigers in double figures with 27 points.
  • Marko Tutunovic added 19 points and Ignacio Rodriguez scored 13 points.
  • Malik Topping posted 11 points and 15 rebounds.


  • Taylor set a career-high with eight rebounds and matched a career-best six assists.
  • Dukes scored in double figures for the first time in his career with 10 points.
  • King had five scorers in double figures for the first time this season and the first time since last season in the Conference Carolinas Tournament semifinal. In that contest, King had six scorers in double figures in a win at Pfeiffer University.
  • King had placed four scorers in double figures three time this season.


  • King stays in Salem to take on Lynn University at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Salem faces Lincoln University (Pa.) on Sunday.
