UMO hands King first conference loss

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The King University men's basketball team ran into a University of Mount Olive squad that played well on both ends of the floor on Friday night. King was held to a shooting percentage under 40 for the fourth time this season as the Trojans handed King their first Conference Carolinas loss 96-71.

  • King got off to a good start, opening up a 9-3 lead behind six points from Jordan Floyd in the opening two minutes.
  • However, the Trojans controlled play the majority of the half, coming back to even the score and take their first lead of the game at 14-11 seven minutes in.
  • Mount Olive then went on a 16-3 run to open up a 30-17 advantage before King tried to work their way back.
  • Je'Don Young and Floyd drilled back-to-back triples, cutting the King deficit to 36-30 with five minutes remaining in the half.
  • The Mount Olive defense dug in over the final four minutes of the half, forcing King into five turnovers and outscoring the Tornado 9-2 to take a 45-32 lead into the locker room.
  • In the half, Mount Olive held King to 37.5 percent from the floor and 38.5 percent from three-point range and 10 turnovers. On the other side, the Trojans shot 52.9 percent from the floor, 54.5 percent from three and committed five turnovers.
  • King cut their deficit back to 14 points on three occasions in the second half, the last coming at 59-45 five minutes into the second half.
  • At that point, the Trojans went on a run and put the contest out of reach. Mount Olive scored 11 straight points to opene up a 70-45 advantage.
  • The Trojan lead grew to as many as 31 as Mount Olive took the game 96-71.
  • King couldn't get their offense going as Mount Olive held the Tornado to 38.7 percent from the floor and 34.8 percent from three.
  • Floyd led King with 17 points while Young followed with 15.
  • Mack Owens chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds.


  • The Trojan offense was just as impressive as their defense, shooting 57.4 percent from the floor and 52.2 percent from three-point range.
  • They also committed eight turnovers while forcing 20 for the Tornado.
  • The top three scorers for the Trojans came off the bench as their bench scored 64 of their 96 points.
  • Darius Spragley led five scorers in double figures with 24 points, Cameron Robinson followed with 16 and Don Pigford added 15 points.
  • Dominique Tham and Jamaal Matin chipped in with 13 points apiece.


  • King stays on the road to face Barton College who is 4-0 in Conference Carolinas play after defeating Lees-McRae College 110-105 on Friday night. Tipoff from Wilson, N.C. is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
  • Mount Olive hosts Lees-McRae on Saturday afternoon.
