BRISTOL, Tenn. – King University head men's basketball coach George Pitts announced the hire of Michael Phelps to round out his staff. Phelps joins the Tornado staff from Springfield, Ohio where he was the athletic director of the Springfield Little Tigers Youth Inc.
"Michael will bring a lot to our basketball program including enthusiasm, coaching experience, and an ability to have special relationships with our players," Pitts said. "Michael is a Christian, young man that is strong in his faith. He and his wife, Kiana, have three children – Marquis 13, Octavia 11, and Michael 20 months."
While serving as the athletic director of the Springfield Little Tigers Youth Inc., Phelps created relationships with numerous companies, colleges and churches in the area. He also developed a travel basketball program and inner city league.
"I am very grateful for this opportunity to return back to coaching basketball at the collegiate level with a superior coaching staff and program," Phelps said. "Furthermore, I would like to thank athletic director David Hicks and his support staff for welcoming the family Phelps in the Tornado family."
Phelps comes to King with a plethora of coaching experience at different camps, including at Michigan University, Xavier University, Ohio State University, University of Virginia and Cedarville University. He served as a volunteer assistant coach at Urbana University and Cedarville University where he helped with recruiting, and their strength and conditioning program in the offseason.
Phelps graduated from Henderson State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport and Community Recreation in 2007. Two years later he earned his Master of Science degree in Sports Administration from Henderson State.
