Bobcat comeback stuns Tornado in Banner Elk

BANNER ELK, N.C. – The King University men's basketball got off to a hot start against rival Lees-McRae College on Wednesday night. The Tornado held a lead in the second half, but the Bobcats came back to stun the Tornado with a late run, taking the contest 74-70.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half

  • King got off to a hot start, opening up a 9-0 lead behind a pair of triples from Mike Salomon and Justin Frazier.
  • Tyre Moore Jr. made it a 12-4 advantage with another three-point basket before the Bobcats started to work their way back with six straight points.
  • Lees-McRae later scored 18-of-20 points, capped by a 14-0 spurt that vaulted the Bobcats into a 28-18 lead.
  • James Brown got the Tornado back on the board, ending the spurt with a trifecta.
  • Brown added two more triples on a 9-0 King run that closed the first half and cut the Tornado deficit to 32-30 at the break.

Second Half

  • Brown picked up where he ended the first half with a triple, giving King a 33-32 lead.
  • Jordan Young broke a tie at 36 with a layup, igniting a 9-0 run that put the Tornado ahead 45-36.
  • A layup by Young and triple from Salomon gave King their largest lead at 63-49 with 7:24 remaining before the Bobcats started to work their way back.
  • Over the final five minutes, the Lees-McRae defense held King to three points, all coming from the free throw line.
  • A three-point play for the Bobcats pulled Lees-McRae within three and a long jump shot cut the King lead to 70-69 with one minute remaining.
  • Lees-McRae drilled a triple with 13 seconds left to take the lead, and the Tornado couldn't get a shot up at the other end as the Bobcats took the contest 74-70.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Young posted his second straight double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds.
  • Brown led the Tornado with 21 points, four rebounds and four assists.
  • Salomon added 15 points and Moore chipped in with 11 points.

FOR THE FOES

  • Quay Kimble led Lees-McRae with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists while Malik Wright added 11 points.
  • Andrew Gardner and Wes Morgan chipped in with 10 points apiece.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The 14 points and 16 rebounds for Young were both career-highs.

UP NEXT

  • King takes the court again on Saturday at Belmont Abbey College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
  • Lees-McRae travels to Mount Olive on Saturday.
