Payton Tipton, Pete Griffith Named Student-Athletes of the Month
Payton Tipton (women's volleyball) and Pete Griffith (men's soccer) have been named the King Student-Athletes of the Month by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has named women's volleyball player Payton Tipton and men's soccer player Pete Griffith as the Student-Athletes of the Month for October. This is the first such honor for both student-athletes.

Payton Tipton, a sophomore from Cleveland, Tenn., has been a mainstay for the Lady Tornado defense from the libero position. In 11 matches during the month of October she totaled 168 digs, averaging 4.20 digs per set. Tipton also tallied 16 assists and put together a team-high 15 service aces in that time. She now has a total of 41 service aces on the season and 437 digs to lead the team as they head into the first round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament. She is currently fourth in the conference in total digs, fifth in digs per set (3.90), and fifth in service aces.

Pete Griffith, a junior from Ballyclare, N. Ireland, returned to the pitch with determination and help King end their season on a high note. In his third game back after battling injury, he scored his first of four goals on the season at Queens (N.C.). In the following match, he shored up a defense that pitched a shutout in the team's first win of the season, a 3-0 victory at Pfeiffer University. He then posted goals in each of his next two matches, including two goals on three shot attempts at Concord. In the Tornado's final two games, Griffith helped the team to a 3-2 win over archrival Lees-McRae and then a 1-nil win over Trevecca Nazarene in the season finale. His four goals over the eight-match stretch were the most among his teammates.

Last month, Joshua Feener (men's soccer) and Hannah Witt (women's cross country) were named the September Student-Athletes of the Month. The SAAC Student-Athlete of the Month award is voted upon by members of SAAC, representing all 24 varsity sports, during their monthly meeting.
