Saavedra, Delisle lead King past Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The King University men's soccer team won their second contest this week when they traveled to the University of Mount Olive on Saturday afternoon. The Tornado got a pair of goals from Ben Delisle and Carlos Saavedra to take the contest 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It didn't take the Tornado long to find the back of the net as Delisle took a pass from Saavedra and chipped his shot over the keeper into the left side of the net in the 11th minute.
  • Following a pair of Dalton Gammon saves to keep the Tornado ahead, Saavedra struck for King in the 19th minute.
  • Saavedra ripped a shot that was saved, but collected the rebound and punched the ball in, giving King the 2-0 lead.
  • Delisle struck again in the 28th minute, this time off a steal and he beat the goalkeeper one-on-one to stretch the Tornado lead to 3-1.
  • Mount Olive cut into their deficit in the 36th minute on a goal from Eric Healy who ripped a shot from about 25 yards out, making the halftime score 3-1 in favor of King.
  • King controlled play to open the second half and in the 71st minute, Delisle ripped a shot that deflected off the post.
  • However, Saavedra was there to collect the rebound and put the ball in, giving King a 4-1 lead.
  • The defense then anchored in and Gammon made one more save to give King the 4-1 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Gammon made five saves in goal for the Tornado.
  • The shots were nearly even with King having the advantage 18-17. King placed 10 shots on goal while Mount Olive had six.
  • The Trojans had a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks.

FOR THE FOES

  • Austin Porter made six saves in goal for Mount Olive.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The win for King marks their first over Mount Olive since 2011, ending a seven-game skid to the Trojans.
  • The multiple goal game for Saavedra marks his first of the season and fourth of his career.
  • Delisle scores two goals in a game for the first time in his career.
