Tornado storm back, erase 2-0 deficit in 2OT win at LMC

BANNER ELK, N.C. – The King University men's soccer team found themselves behind Lees-McRae College 2-0 in the opening 10 minutes, but the Tornado came storming back. King evened the score before halftime, and Carlos Saavedra gave King the 3-2 win with a goal in the 107th minute.

  • Lees-McRae grabbed the lead on a penalty kick goal in the third minute and added another in the seventh minute on a free kick from outside the box.
  • Jairo Ruiz Caram got the Tornado on the board in the 11th minute when Charles Johnson threaded a pass through the defense to Ruiz Caram who beat the goalkeeper.
  • Play went back-and-forth until Saavedra needled a cross through the box that found Ben Delisle who put the ball in the back of the net to even the score at 2-2.
  • In the second half, the teams traded blows, with King having the better scoring chances.
  • The Tornado placed four of their six shots on frame, but all were turned away by the Bobcat goalkeeper.
  • Dalton Gammon came up with one save in the second half as the Tornado defense stood tall, keeping the Bobcats off the scoreboard as the contest went to overtime even at 2-2.
  • In the first overtime, Saavedra had the first opportunity, but his shot went wide.
  • Lees-McRae had a chance in the 99th minute, but Gammon came up with a save, sending the contest to a second extra session.
  • King continued the pressure in the second overtime with a pair of corner kicks in the opening minutes.
  • Gammon came up with another save in the 107th minute as King turned the field.
  • Following a foul, Ruiz Caram placed a ball in the box off the free kick, which found Saavedra who placed his shot back across inside the left post, giving King the 3-2 victory.


  • The Bobcats outshot King 17-14, but King had 10 shots on goal to Lees-McRae's six.
  • Gammon made four saves for the Tornado, two coming in overtime.


  • Anton Sundstrom made seven saves for Lees-McRae.


  • The goals Delisle and Saavedra were their sixth of the season and Ruiz Caram now has two goals on the season.


  • King takes on Barton College on Friday in the regular season finale. Kickoff from Parks Field is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
  • Lees-McRae hosts Emmanuel College on Thursday.
