Tornado drop season opener at Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. – The King University men's soccer team opened the season on the road with a solid effort at Concord University on Thursday afternoon. Looking at the box score, the Tornado seemed to outplay the Mountain Lions, however, Concord found the back of the net in the second half to take the contest 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jairo Ruiz Caram had the first opportunity for the Tornado with a shot on frame in the eighth minute, however, it was turned away by the Concord goalkeeper.
  • Concord answered with a pair of chances, but Dalton Gammon came up with a save for the Tornado.
  • On the other end of the field, Charles Johnson ripped a shot that was saved by the Mountain Lion keeper to keep the game scoreless.
  • The Tornado had two more opportunities before the end of the half, the best came in the 30th minute, but his shot was turned away.
  • Ruiz Caram recorded the first chance of the second half in the 50th minute, but again his shot was turned away.
  • Concord struck in the 64th minute as Michael Shelor found the back of the net with and assist to Maxime Ramioulle.
  • King was able to take six more shots in the remainder of the game, but only one on frame.
  • That one on frame came in the 70th minute from Lucas Lavender, but it too was turned away as the Mountain Lions took the contest 1-0.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Zubair Taylor, Ruiz Caram and Lavender led the Tornado with three shots each as Ruiz Caram put two on frame.
  • Gammon made two saves in goal.

FOR THE FOES

  • The goal for Shelor was his first of the season.
  • Kyle Brown made six saves for the Mountain Lions.

  • King plays their home opener on Saturday against USC Aiken at 4:00 p.m.
