BRISTOL, Tenn. – Looking to get back into the win column in Conference Carolinas play, the King University men's volleyball team squared up against North Greenville University. The Tornado was able to get the first set and eventually won in four behind the strong play of Eddie Moushikhian and Nick Serowski.
North Greenville (8-14, 2-10 CC) got on the board first and quickly got out to a 4-1 lead before the Tornado made a charge and a Moushikhian service ace tied the set up at six. Moushikhian gave King the lead on a kill assisted by Nick Drooker The score was all tied at 11 before the Tornado went on a four to zero run capped off by a Drooker kill and a Crusaders attack error. Stephen Brown registered a kill off a pass from Drooker to open the lead to 17-13. North Greenville would get within three but it would not be enough as back-to-back Moushikhian kills gave the Tornado set one, 25-20.
King (11-7, 7-3 CC) was able to get on the board first in set two, tallying four straight points before the Crusaders got on the board. North Greenville achieved their first lead of the set at 9-8 off a Curtis Westra service ace. The Crusaders jumped their lead up to four points at 19-15; however, King would come back and narrow the lead down to two points at 23-21. It would not be enough as Luuga Vailu'u would record a kill, giving the Crusaders set two, 25-22.
Set three was a quick one for the Tornado as they rapidly grabbed a 4-0 advantage off two attack errors and two Drooker service aces. The lead would grow to five and six points at 11-5 when Serowski delivered two service aces. Matthew Lychock notched a kill to give King a 15-8 lead and the advantage continued to grow when a North Greenville attack error brought the lead to 19-11. Jeff Sprayberry earned a kill and King won set three, 25-14.
In the final set of the evening, the Crusaders raced out and grabbed the first two points before a service error got the Tornado on the board. King would trail by as many as five points but would eventually gain the lead at 12-11 off a Sprayberry kill. North Greenville tied the set up at 15 and a Moushikhian kill gave the Tornado a 16-15 lead. A Lychock kill gave King a two point advantage at 22-20 and King would not look back as Moushikhian registered a kill to give the Tornado set four, 25-21 and the match 3-1.
Leading the way for the Tornado was Moushikhian, tallying a double-double with 19 kills and 15 digs. Serowski posted 14 kills and 14 digs in the contest to record a double-double as well. Drooker added 51 assists and 12 digs in the contest. King hit .301 while North Greenville recorded an attack percentage of .229. The Tornado tallied six service aces in the outing.
The Tornado will be in action next on Friday, March 20 when they will travel to Barton College. First serve is set for 7:00 pm in Wilson, N.C.
