Tornado drop season-opener to #9 Lewis

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The King University men's volleyball team opened their season against ninth-ranked Lewis University on Friday night in the Student Center Complex. The Tornado hung with the Flyers early, but Lewis pulled away late to take the 3-0 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set

  • Lewis used a 6-1 run early in the first set to take a 9-4 advantage.
  • Sean Kohlhase started a run and Jon Wheaton ended the spurt with a kill that pulled King within 10-8.
  • Later in the set, King scored five-of-six points, cutting their deficit back to two at 18-16 following a Kohlhase kill.
  • The Tornado held their deficit at two before the Flyers scored three of the final four points to take the first set 25-21.

Second Set

  • Lewis broke the second set open with five straight points that opened up a 14-6 lead.
  • The Tornado tried to get a run going, but couldn't recover as the Flyers took the set 25-17.

Third Set

  • The Tornado came out on fire in the third set, scoring the first two points on kills from Joshua Kim.
  • Julian Young later capped a 3-0 King run that gave the Tornado a 7-3 lead and forced a Lewis timeout.
  • The Tornado held a 12-10 lead before the Flyers went on a 5-1 run to gain a 15-13 advantage.
  • The spurt continued for Lewis as they scored five straight points, taking a commanding 21-15 lead as they took the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • King hit .338 in the match, including .500 in the second set.
  • Suetonius Harris led the offense with seven kills and hit .385. He added a team-high seven digs.
  • Kohlhase and Young added six kills each while Wheaton posted five kills and hit .556.
  • Chandler Christy posted 32 assists.

FOR THE FOES

  • Tyler Mitchem led the Flyers with 13 kills and hit .765 in the match.
  • TJ Murry and Ryan Coenen added seven kills each.
  • Matt Yoshimoto handed out 36 assists to go along with five digs and six aces.

  • King hosts eighth-ranked Loyola University Chicago on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. in the Student Center Complex.
  • Lewis takes on the University of Mount Olive on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. in the Student Center Complex.
