Tornado fall in four at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The King University men's volleyball team fell behind early at the University of Charleston early on Friday night. King came back to take the fourth set, but the Tornado couldn't complete the comeback as the Golden Eagles took the contest 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set

  • The Golden Eagles used a 7-1 run to gain a 10-4 advantage early in the opening set.
  • Charleston continued to extend their lead as they opened up a 22-11 advantage before the Tornado scored five of the next seven points.
  • It wasn't enough, however, as the Golden Eagles took the set 25-16.

Second Set

  • The Tornado quickly gained an advantage in the second set as a block from Dalton Johnson and Suetonius Harris gave King a 7-3 lead.
  • The teams then traded points until a 5-0 Charleston run broke a tie 18 late in the set.
  • Following a King point, the Golden Eagles scored a pair of points to take the set 25-19.

Third Set

  • The third set was tight until the Golden Eagles went on a 7-0 run to take a 20-14 lead.
  • King cut into the deficit, but Charleston had two chances at set point as they led 24-22.
  • However, Sean Kohlhase evened the score with a kill.
  • Another kill from Kohlhase gave King the 27-25 victory.

Fourth Set

  • Charleston broke a 7-7 tie with three straight points to open up a lead in the fourth set.
  • However, the Tornado answered with three straight points before the teams began to trade points.
  • The Golden Eagles gained control of the set with a 4-1 run that gave Charleston a 20-16 advantage.
  • King came back to even the score at 22 following kills from Julian Young and Kohlhase.
  • However, the Golden Eagles scored the final three points to take the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Harris led the Tornado with 15 kills and added four digs.
  • Kohlhase followed with nine kills and Young added eight kills.
  • Chandler Christy handed out 16 assists and JT Deppe dished out 14 helpers.
  • Deppe added eight digs and Leo de Quadros added eight digs.

FOR THE FOES

  • Max Senica led Charleston with 19 kills and 10 digs.
  • Maarten Bartels added 17 kills while Eugene Stuart chipped in with 10 kills.
  • Chase Johnson handed out 47 assists.

UP NEXT

  • King returns to the court on Tuesday when they travel to rival Lees-McRae College. First serve for the Conference Carolinas opener is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
  • Charleston hosts George Mason University on Saturday.
