Kohlhase lifts Tornado to sweep of NGU, into conference final

WILSON, N.C. – The King University men's volleyball team advanced to the Conference Carolinas Men's Volleyball Championship title game with a sweep of sixth seed North Greenville University on Wednesday night. Sean Kohlhase led the second-seeded Tornado offensively with a .500 attack percentage and 17 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set

  • King fell behind 3-1 in the early going but answered with a 5-1 spurt to take a 6-4 lead following kills from Joshua Kim and Kohlhase.
  • A Kohlhase ace later gave King a 13-9 lead and Dalton Johnson came up with a block that forced a North Greenville timeout with King leading 16-12.
  • The Tornado held their lead there, taking the set 25-21.

Second Set

  • King kept the momentum rolling as they opened up a 4-0 lead.
  • Kohlhase gave King their largest lead of the set at 14-9 with a kill.
  • North Greenville tried to come back, but King wouldn't let the Crusaders get any closer than two points as a Kohlhase kill gave King the set 25-22.

Third Set

  • King held a tight two-point advantage throughout the third set as Kohlhase gave King a 6-4 lead with a kill.
  • Back-to-back Tornado points stretched the Tornado lead to 21-17 before King scored three straight points to end the match.
  • Chandler Christy started the spurt with a kill before a Jon Wheaton block gave King a chance at match point.
  • Kohlhase then pounded out his 17 kills of the set, giving King the 25-19 win and the sweep.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Kohlhase posted 17 kills on 28 attempts against three errors for a .500 attack percentage. He added five digs.
  • Kim followed with seven kills and seven digs.
  • Suetonius Harris led the defense with eight digs while Wheaton posted four blocks, one solo.
  • Christy handed out 30 assists and chipped in with six digs.

FOR THE FOES

  • Aaron Campbell led North Greenville with 15 kills and five digs.
  • Jake Boldog handed out 34 assists while Cade McGee and Arlind Rojba led the defense with six digs each.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • The win advances King to the Conference Carolinas Men's Volleyball Championship title game on Thursday night.
  • The Tornado won the title a season ago.

UP NEXT

  • King will face the winner of top-seed Barton College and fifth-seed Limestone College. First serve from Barton is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
