BRISTOL, Tenn. – In their annual game at the Stateline Classic, the King University softball team took a narrow win over Virginia Intermont College. Hannah Light tossed a five-hit shutout, and Hannah Smith hit a two-run home run to give the Tornado the 2-0 win.
Cassie Ringstaff singled to right field and stole second early in the first inning. After an out, Smith came up to bat and crushed the first pitch she saw over the center field fence to give King the 2-0 lead.
That was a Light need as she only allowed one Virginia Intermont (28-11) runner to reach second base in the game, a Samantha Perry-Shifflett double in the second inning. The Coeburn, Va., native needed 113 pitches to earn her 17th win of the season and second complete game shutout in three days. She only faced four batters over the minimum and struck out seven.
King (23-24) threatened to score with two runners on base in each the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but could not push any more runs. Smith led the offense, going 2-for-3 and driving in both runs for the Tornado.
The Tornado will be in action again this weekend when the travel to Limestone College and Belmont Abbey College. The doubleheader on Saturday at Limestone is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m., and Sunday's double dip with Belmont Abbey is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
