BURLINGTON, N.C. – The top seed King University softball team opened the Conference Carolinas Tournament with a narrow win over Pfeiffer University. The Tornado plated the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the eighth seeded Falcons 2-1.
The Tornado (30-24) got on the board early as Christina Melcher started the home half of the first inning with a double to right center field. She later came in to score on a Fallon Thomas single up the middle, giving King the early 1-0 advantage.
The eighth seeded Falcons (20-27) were quick to answer, however, as Celia Dew laced a leadoff single in the second inning. After being sacrifice to second base, she scored on a two-out Tyresha Ellis single to center to even the score.
The Falcons threatened in the sixth inning, but couldn't push any runs across and Hannah Light settled in at that point. Light tossed earned the win, only allowing one run on six hits in seven innings of work.
The Tornado gained the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as Thomas led off the inning with a walk. Back-to-back errors by Pfeiffer allowed Thomas to score and give King the 2-1 lead which held up behind Light.
Thomas led the Tornado, going 2-for-2 and while driving in one run and scoring another.
The Tornado will face Coker College at 4:00 p.m., in the winners bracket of the Conference Carolinas Tournament.
