King sweeps Coker in the rain

BRISTOL, Tenn. – On a day that was filled with rain, the King University softball team turned in a pair of complete performances in a doubleheader sweep of Coker College. The Tornado topped the Cobras 5-1 in the first game before taking the nightcap 9-1 behind an offense that pounded out 14 hits.

Tori McComas got King (11-19) on the board in the second inning of game one when she ripped a two-out single that scored Amber Walker who walked earlier in the inning. The Tornado struck again in the third when Amanda Sports started a one-out rally with a single to center. After a walk, she came around to score on a Hannah Smith single, giving King a 2-0 lead after three innings.

Coker (19-18) got on the board in the fourth inning when Megan Strickland dropped a single down the right field line, and after holding a third, Taylor Barcomb then came home, cutting the King lead in half.

However, King put the game out of reach in the sixth as Smith started the frame with a walk. Walker followed with a single, and Amber Palmer dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up. The first run scored on a Cobra error before McComas drove in Walker with a single. King added another run to take a 5-1 lead after six innings.

Tornado pitcher Morgan Lowe worked around an error and a walk in the seventh inning, earning her eighth win of the year. She tossed all seven innings, allowing the one run on three hits and striking out five. Offensively, McComas led the way, going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.

The King offense erupted in the first inning of game two after Lauren Smith sat the Cobras down in order in the top of the inning. Stephanie Rodriguez started the inning with a walk and Sports followed with a single. Smith got King on the board with single that scored Sports, and Walker followed with a single that scored Chrissy Melcher. After the second out of the inning, Palmer and Diamond Callwood registered back-to-back run scoring singles, putting King ahead 4-0 after the first inning.

Smith tossed another perfect inning in the second, bringing the red hot Tornado offense back to the plate. An error and walk started a rally, and Melcher drove in Rodriguez with a single up the middle. Later in the inning, Smith and Walker registered consecutive run scoring singles, giving the Tornado a 7-0 advantage.

In the third inning, Sports stretch the King lead to 8-0 when she drove in Rodriguez with a sacrifice fly.

Coker kept the game going in the fifth when a walk sparked a two-out rally. Jill Lewis and Ashley Gallman then registered back-to-back singles, plating Coker's lone run of the contest.

However, the Tornado ended the game in the sixth when Sports started the frame with a single and moved to second on a groundout. Smith then drove her in with a single to right field, ending the 9-1 King victory.

Lauren Smith earned the win in five innings of work, allowing one run on four hits. Hollyn Franklin tossed the final inning in the circle for King. Smith paced the offense, going 4-for-4 with three runs batted in. Callwood went 3-for-3, driving in one while Walker went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Sports scored three times, going 2-for-2 and driving in one.

King will be in action again on Tuesday when they travel to take on UVa-Wise. First pitch from Wise, Va. is slated for 4:00 p.m.
